I was playing around with dvdshrink (a windows dvd ripping software), and was able to successfully watch the files I backed-up to my windows harddrive. I moved the files over to my Knoppmyth box /myth/video and can't figure out how the heck to play the files using mythvideo or mythdvd. I tried selecting the video_ts.ifo, but nothing happens.

Also, anyone have any suggestions on what's the best type of file to convert dvd's to (such as divx), taking into consideration quality/size? And when converted, will these play on the pvr 350's tv-out?

well I have no idea what a .ifo file is and I doubt mplayer will either. To see if a format is supported you'll need to look at the mplayer docs cause that's what mythtv uses to play dvd's and videos.

As far as backing up file divx or xvid should work fine, and if you are using the pvr350 framebuffer support either should play I think, but nothing but a true mpeg2 file will utilize the hardware decryption. So if you want it hardware accelerated on playback you will have to just rip the .vob files and not compress or transcode them.

I think the .ifo files contain the menu and frame info. I see them in all the dvd's when I look through them.

The dvd's I decrypted created a lot of vob files, but when I try to play any of them in mythvideo I get no response. Am I supposed to set any special setting to allow these files to play?

I wouldn't think so I have had no problems playing .vob files I riped using mythtv. maybe try one of the bigger ones that is probably the movie. maybe the smaller ones are menu items that mplayer can't understand. other than that I dont' know.

You need to have a "VIDEO_TS" and "AUDIO_TS" folder in that directory. And put all the files in the "VIDEO_TS" then you could probably point MythDVD to that directory, and that should play.

or you could just take an afternoon and rip all the dvd's on the mythtv box.

Ok, I finally got off my lazy butt and put the DVD writer I recently purchased into my myth box. I actually took out the cdrom drive and placed the dvd writer in its place. I have the libdvdcss installed (during installation it actually stated that it installed libdvdcss2) and I have /dev/dvd linked to /dev/scd0. When I attempt to play a dvd, encrypted or not, nothing happens.

I have searched and found some info in this thread, but no solution:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... t=dvd+play

Also, when I hit the rip dvd button, I get the following message, "Cannot connect to your Myth Transcoding Deamon. You can try hitting any number key to start it. If you still see this messages, then something is really wrong." So I hit 0 on my remote and the correct dvd info shows up on the screen. I hit 0 again and the ripping/transcoding starts working. After ripping/transcoding for a couple of minutes I get the following message, "Your connection to the Myth Transcoding Daemon has gone away. This is not a good thing."

I find it strange that the ripping/transcoding button is able to see my dvd, even though hitting the play dvd button does not respond at all. When I tried changing the link for /dev/dvd to /dev/hdc, and attempted to rip the dvd, the dvd info could not be located.

When I try to play the dvd in an xterm with the command "mplayer -dvd 1 -dvd-device /dev/dvd" I get the following:
Code:
CPU: Advanced Micro Devices Athlon TB Thunderbird (Family:6, Stepping: 2)
CPUFlags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3Dnow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 0 SSE2: 0
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 3DNow 3DNowEx SSE
Loading config file /usr/local/etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf: No such file or directory.
Loading config file /root/.mplayer/config
Illegal instruction

Is it a problem that my mplayer is compiled for SSE but my Athlon does not support it? Is it a problem that mplayer.conf doest not exist?

Another question I have is am I supposed to mount the dvd or is this done automatically?

I just started mythfrontend from an xterm to catch the messages that get spit out when attempting to watch a video from mythvideo, or playing a dvd and the only error I see is "Reading config file /usr/local/etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf: No such file or directory".

The video I attempted to play was an xvid video and I was able to play it with no issues with windows medial player. Do I have some setting somewhere screwed up?

erase all uncompleted files (vob file uncomplete) generated for MythDVD in /myth/video. The existence them break dvd rip in MythDVD.
