KnoppMyth R4V5
SE440BX-based motherboard
Pentium II 400 MHz
192 MB SDRAM
Apollo GeForce2 MX400 video card (no tv-out)
Creative Labs CT4740 Ensoniq 1371-based sound card
3Com 3CSOHO100-TX network card
no hard drive

I record on a separate backend at 320 x 240 Mpeg4.

This 400MHz backend plays smooth and works great. I tried this computer in the past with an NVidia Vanta LT-based video card and the video played back very choppy (1 FPS). With an older version of KnoppMyth, I got no video at all.

I didn't think that the video card would have such a large effect on playback but the GeForce2 I am using now works great.

Once the CD spins down, this system (not including the monitor) uses 35 watts idle at the menu, 40-45 watts when watching a recording or live TV.

How'd you do that no hard drive trick? That would be great for my frontend. Did you create a ramdisk and a custom boot CD?

I'm impressed that you have a frontend running on a 400Mhz PII, I tried that a while ago, and foung it was very jerky. Now I know there's actually hope if I try a new video card.

well that's what the livecd does. it creates a ramdisk, and doesn't need a harddrive. he managed the 400mhz because he lowered his resolution and recorded in mpeg4, it will be jerky at full resolution mpeg2.

The KnoppMyth CD can be used to run as a frontend, no hard drive needed.

Boy I must look like a dumbass. I was thinking of my frontend where I have recompiled mplayer, NFS and my dvd jukebox setup. I completely forgot that you can run the front end from the CD. I thought maybe Cledus had burned a special CD, since that was what I was thinking about a few days ago to get rid of my noisy hard drive. I read more into his post that was there. Sorry
