So... My KnoppMyth system is finally finished. I'm calling it Tier 1 because it would work out of the box, but I chose to modify it a bit.

Here are the specs:

PC Chips M-871G motherboard (MicroATX, socket 754)
AMD Mobile Athlon XP-M 2800+ (1600 MHz)
512 MB DDR400 RAM
80 GB and 320 GB hard drives
Hauppage WinTV-PVR 500

The machine runs as a backend only (the frontends are my and my roommates' other machines), and records upwards of 70 shows a week with no problems whatsoever. Actually, I think it's scheduled to record 31 hours of video on Friday of this week alone...

Now for the fine print... I'm running R5A16, so "out of the box", the PVR 500 wouldn't work. I followed the instructions detailed elsewhere in the forums to get it working. With a newer build, it works without modification. I tested it. But... R5A22 is not recommended, and for some reason, I couldn't get the Mac version of the frontend (three of our other machines are Macs) to connect to the backend running R5A26. So I chose R5A16 and modified it.

I also manually modified the disk layout. Rather than use one disk for everything, I have /, /cache, and swap on the 80 gig disk, and the 320 gig is one huge partition mounted as /myth. Again, this was a personal decision, completely unnecessary.

I also installed ntpd to keep the clock running correctly.

So, even with those points, I'm still calling it a "Tier 1" setup, since it could have worked out of the box, if I chose to do so.

For a list of the other pile of computers we have, check here.

Update: I upgraded to R5A30.1, and now everything really does work out of the box.

Will this run the front end well too?

I recently tested it. It works just fine, after making a minor modification to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.

Change the line that says
Code:
Driver  "vesa"

to
Code:
Driver  "sis"

Unless, of course, you don't use the onboard video and put some other video card in the AGP slot. I opted not to, since I figured it would just be a waste of money.
