After installing R5E50 on a Gigabyte 8VM533M-RZ, you receive the following message at the end of the first boot:

INIT: Id "c7" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

The message occurs because X windows is trying to start and can't.

It can't start because the on-board video chipset was identified as a plain old S3 chipset during the boot process. As such, the X windows configuration file was set up to use the plain old S3 driver. That driver won't work.

The chipset is actually the S3 ProSavage8 chipset.

The solution is to edit the X windows configuration file and tell it to use the "savage" driver instead.

1. Hit Enter
2. Login as root
3. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
4. Find the line that reads: Driver "s3"
5. Change it to: Driver "savage"
6. Save the file
7. Wait at least 5 minutes, the system will automaitcally reattempt to start X Windows.
8. Continue with the set up as normal.
