Only 128Mb of RAM? I'd normally figure 256Mb as minimal, and highly recommned more memory if you run into any performance problems...

particularly on an nforce2 MB since you can't utilize the advantage of dual channel memory without two sticks of ram, so unless you have two 64Mb sticks you can't get that advantage.

i know i have 2 slots for dual chan. and one for single chan. i plan on upgrading .. but this project has nickle and penneyed me to death. slim case that wouldn't hold pvr-250 card. new case with no PS. bought the wrong PS. Original capture card wasn't compatible ( not enough reading) . so i will upgrade the ram. The only place i have seen a performance hit is in the Gears visualizer. i was just giving what i wish i had when i started. 1 stop shopping for the n00bs.

still more to come from me ...
setting up WebMin to start at startup and FTP into the MythBox for OS X users.
Switching between TV and Monitor. ( there is probably an easier way but this works )

later:
IRBlaster setup
Cable TV hookup. ( receive higher than chan 125)

some things i meant to add.

what i gave you will set you up to watch tv on a monitor.

there are posts about setting up twin view so you can have the screen shown on both a monitor and tv. this is helpful when you want to make adjustments to config files.
heres why:
when you set up the XF86Config-4 file to show on the tv. it works great. but if you hit Ctl-Alt-F1 your TV screen could go crazy, so you would not be able to edit it to go back to monitor mode

here is my fix for that:
install nano buy typing this in at the black log in screen
apt-get install nano

follow the steps listed here http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=422
i used nano in place of vi ( seems to be easier for a n00b)
add to step one the Allow= (with your gateway IP here)
i could not log in to the mythbox because of my router without that.
and add Allow=(your second Computers IP) this is the computer that you will be logging into the myth box webmin with.
step two was not applicable in my situation.
from here if you are on a windows box you can use somba to log in per instructions or if you want to use FTP keep going.
As for me I am a OS X user. and it doesn't play well with samba ( not till Tiger anyway) so i have to use FTP.
before you restart your Myth box log in to webmin on your second machine and
follow the instructions here. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... b&start=30
this will make the webmin start every time.
now you can restart if you want .. dont think it is necessary.

you should be able to log in to your myth box now through your favorite FTP client.
You can view files and copy them once on your second machine you can use text editor to modify them.
When you try to put the edited file back you might not have permission.
There is probably a way to get root permissions through webmin, but i dont know how.

if permissions became an issue. here is how to fix them.
to gain access to the config files you need you will need to enter this at the black screen
**** warning this will make you machine less secure.*******
type:
chmod 777 /etc/X11/ this allows anyone to add things to the X11 file, like XF86Config-4 file you need to switch screens.
chmod 777 /etc this will give you access to the lilo.conf that you need to do to modify to get rid of the start up delay.

both of these fixes are documented here, towards the bottom.

http://knoppmythwiki.homelinux.org/inde ... utoinstall

webmin also has a shell script feature that you could use to execute the chmod function on a file or folder.

i know this seems like a lot but let me access everything that i needed.

now i can make duplicate Xf86Config-4 files and swap them by changing their names(XF86Config-4_old, or -4_monitor) in my FTP client. I use this to switch back and forth between computer and TV. ** Remember to change their permissions after you copy them back to the MythBox**

i also use this to move music, picts and movies to my Mythbox. When moving files you have to fix their permissions after you move them. Fetch allows you to do this with a right click on the file or you can select a group of files to change permissions on all of them. It seems you have to do this at each level. Artist, Album, Songs to get myth to see them.

*************EDIT:*******************
Xsecrets clued me in to another safer way to return your XF86Config-4 file after you make the modification and want to return to the previous one.

Open terminal
type
ssh (your MythBox ip)
enter the user (not ROOT?)password and you are in.

here it is the same thing as if you were sittng in front of the terminal.

Thanx Xsecrets You rock.
***********Edit:*********************(11/17/2004)

there is a sample file in the X11 folder that is named XF86Config-4.nvidia-tvout.sample
rename XF86Config-4 to XF86Config-4-old
rename XF86Config-4.nvidia-tvout.sample to XF86Config-4
( i will clean this code up when i get home tonight)
Code:
mv /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4-old
mv XF86Config-4.nvidia-tvout.sample /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Over scan fix:
I had to change the overscan in the new XF86COnfig-4 file. I changed the line :
Code:
 Option "TVOverScan" "0.8"

to
Code:
 Option "TVOverScan" "0.7"

But you can play with this to get the best fill for your screen.

I went through the install page and didn't see the chmod stuff which is a good thing. If for some reason people feel this needs to be in there then it should have huge warnings all around it. You should NEVER make etc world writable. The prefered method would be to use su and enter your root password then you can edit the files.

i knew it wasn't healthy to do things like this, but for the most part im shooting in the dark here. i need a way of accessing the files from OSX. As it stands right now Samba is not the answer. NFS might be but i don't know any thing about it. Any advice would be appreciated. Does anyone know how to set up the webmin t allow root level access to all files ... that would be the best way.

just for the sake of knowledge, is it bad for the system or just insecure?

like i said in my first lines of the original post. I am a n00b.

what files do you need access to from OSX? There is not need or reason to have root level access to all of the files particularly remotely. I should be VERY difficult to get root level access to file remotely. the only thing you should need root level access for is editing system config files, and you can use ssh for that. It's putty on windows, and I know OSX has ssh, but I'm not sure what it uses, my guess would be just ssh from the command line like linux.

I guess the big thing is what are you trying to do exactly, other than see just how insecure you can make the box? the places where you would ever need to get samba or nfs access to are already shared in the default config, and don't need root access.

i need access to the XF86Config-4 file to switch back and forth between the TV output and the monitor. when i try to move to the command line from myth front end i cant read the screens for various reasons. i have tried the refresh and synch commands but they seem to have little effect. and with out the FTP it is a one shot deal. If it doesn't work im stuck on the TV or nothing.

beyond that i can do everything from Linux. But to have access to the files in those other directories is nice . it is easier for me to use TEXT edit on my OS X box than nano on the linux box. I don't know all the codes for copy, move, duplicate, rename, backup and the like in linux. but in my ftp client it is just a right click away. If i could log in as root through ftp I wouldn't need to change permissions for anything.

ssh, i have heard of this in passing but no data on it. If it is what i think it is it is a remote log in for UNIX systems. I searched for it in the forms but didn't know what it was called. I tried terms like remote, terminal, login, access, etc. That is one of my biggest problems the semantics of all this stuff. i know what i want to do but don't know what its real name is an so i search in vain. OS X is BSD based and I have terminal access but i rarely use it. because of the semantics. i can copy someone else's instructions from a website or book .. but they rarely go in to detail about what the commands mean. ex. i have no clue what all those letters are after the tar command. i know each one serves a purpose and i could find out if i researched enough, and i intend to when i have more of a need and time.

in my case it is a dedicated myth box nothing special saved on it. if it got hacked tomorrow i wouldn't be too upset now that i can set it up in about 2-hours( thanx in large part to the info on this forum).

thanx for you time and effort with all this. it means a lot to me that you are willing to help out so much in this forum.

ssh is very similar to telnet, but it encrypts the traffic. Basically if you connect to the box with ssh it is just like you went into a console on the box itself. you can run any commands you could from a console, and they will execute on the mythtv box. So the preferred way to do what you want is to ssh into the mythtv box as a user like mythtv then use the su command to become root and make the edits you need to. although I believe in the default setup of knoppmyth you can ssh in as root, so su is not needed.

to switch back and forth quickly I would make a couple of files for example XF86Config-4.tv and XF86Config-4.monitor then when you want to switch all you would have to do is cp XF86Config-4.tv XF86Config-4 or vice versa.

Hi Xtopher,

I have the same setup as well. Could you please post the XF86Config file that you are using for TV out? I'm having some trouble getting good looking video.

Thanks,

Adrian
