Warning, read the whole thing first!

Note that I have Rev B of this card. Rev A uses a Marvell chip but B uses an Atheros chipset.

It works with ndiswrapper - install the Windows drivers from the CD with:
ndiswrapper -i NetA3AB.inf

This will copy the files to /etc/ndiswrapper/neta3ab and create a couple of .conf files. The short name is pointing to the wrong file. Delete the symlink 168c:001a.conf and point it to the 168c:001a:1186:3a16.conf file instead.

modprobe ndiswrapper will load the driver.

BAD NEWS: This causes a kernel panic in R4V5's kernel (2.4.25-chw). Locks up the machine hard, power-cycle to get it back.

GOOD NEWS: Compile/install 2.4.27 and it works! Use wlcardconfig to set up the appropriate parameters. I had to manually specify the channel, it wouldn't autoscan. After setting up the interface, it worked! I was so happy.

Of course, 2.4.27 doesn't like using mythtv to view through bttv, so I'm one step back. Maybe by the time you read this, I'll have figured it out.

Hi,

Did you make any progress trying to have KnoppMyth R4V5 with ndiswrapper driver ?

I have the same problem : trying latest ndiswrapper (1.1) with R4V5 causes kernel crashes. Dont want to recompile to a newer kernel.

Perhaps someone else knows what to do to make ndiswrapper work and , finally , have Wifi on the Myth box ...

Thanks for any help

I got it working almost flawlessly* with a newer kernel. It looks like the problem is not in the ndiswrapper nor in the drivers, but a buggy kernel version.

I have since moved on to Kernel 2.6.9 and it works very well. I'm currently downloading a 3GB mpg over my 802.11b network (haven't upgraded my base station yet) at 455.2 kB/s.

* the only gotcha is that it refuses to find the right channel on first try. I run wlcardconfig and just press ENTER at all prompts and it finds it fine.

Welcome!

Try this:

1) Create a directory on your home folder, and copy all of the driver files off the cd. (*.sys, *.inf, *.dll I think)
2) (as root) apt-get update; apt-get install ndiswrapper
3) cd yournewdirectory
4) ndiswrapper -i NetA3AB.inf (case is significant and should match your file)
5) modprobe ndiswrapper

See if this works first. You'll learn some good valuable Linux skills as you do this, too!

Good, you've done some good stuff there. Do a lsmod, and see if ndiswrapper is installed. Now run wlcardconfig. You may need to apt-get install... wireless-utils? to get this command.

Run /sbin/ifconfig to see if eth0 is up. If not, type ifup eth0, and try pinging something.

I do not see it in the lsmod list, nor do i see the NetA3AB driver. I did try typing ndiswrapper -i /home/wireless/NetA3AB.inf again and it said already installed.

the apt-get install ndiswrapper gave me an error "Couldn't find package ndiswrapper

does apt-get conenct to the itnernet? cause I dont ahve any internet until i get the wireless card working..

wlconfig coems up and says No Wireless network card found.

ifconfig shows sit0 Link encap:IPv6-in-IPv4

I believe this interface got installed during the knoppmyth auto install
is this maybe overrriding the card? how do i remove it?

"modprobe ndiswrapper" is all you should need to load the module, the -i /path/ syntax after that is only once, to install the drivers in the right spot.

You don't need to apt-get it, because you already got it. You may need other packages later, and you will need internet access for that, somehow.

When you reboot, you lose the module, so don't do that yet. You can put ndiswrapper on a line by itself in /etc/modules and it should load up.

If you don't have wlcardconfig, iwconfig will show you wireless parameters of all cards in the system. If your DLink one comes up at all, you know you're almost there.

ok! I got the tv tune working! I got the Network card working! and i got the wirless card to detect!

but the problem now is it seems to hang the system when it tries to connect to the wirless router.

I put the WEP key when it asked for a key.. is that right?

Congratulations! You have accomplished a huge amount. I hope you took notes, as this will come up again :)

Yes, it should be. You can try turning off the WEP on your router for a few minutes to see if it works without it.

Another way to enter this is "iwconfig wlan0 essid=efadfefad" (whatever your network interface and key is).

hmm still cant get this to work

I have tried setting the settings under /etc/network/interfaces

here is my interfaces file
(since inow have LAN working)

# /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)

# The loopback interface
# automatically added when upgrading

iface ath0 inet static

You might have set your route to go through your wired ethernet as a default gateway. Type "route" and see.

The line you want to change is in the interfaces file is "auto", replace eth0 with ath0 and go from there.

I think its the wep settings or possibly having 2 network interfaces is messing it up..

I dont want to disable wep cause i like security :D

man this is frustrating...
