Post subject:  R516A Asus A7N8X-VM, 6.5GB drive, Network Attached Video!!

Hi everyone,
This is my first experience with knoppmyth, but not my first with linux.
I installed knoppmyth a few days ago and I must say... that has got to be the fastest my painless linux install ever!

My goal for this machine was simply to play back pre-recorded videos of various formats (both from optical disc and over the network), to playback music and to check weather (well that last one is just for showing off to friends). The pvr functions are of no use to me because I don't have any sort of cable tv (student I am)

Computer specs:

Asus A7N8X-VM (using onboard video output with a custom made dongle)
512 MB RAM
XP2000+ CPU (I think it is a palomino core, it runs hot)
6.5GB 4200 rpm laptop HDD
Pioneer slotload DVD-ROM
black cheap microATX case

^-- thats it! I had the parts in my closet, so my cost was nothing.

The HDD is painfully slow but since I don't run any videos off the local HDD it doesn't matter to me. I am using samba to connect to my desktop to playback videos. DVDs work great as well.

Stuff I did to linux:

I recompiled mplayer with a bunch of new codecs so I could playback xvid and divx.

Setup XF86Config-4 with nvidia tv-out settings (had some weird problems with this). It works fine now, but the first time I rebooted after changing it to tv-out the console disappeared and was replaced by green blocks. I rebooted again and changed console in lilo to default 80x40 (or whatever) and it worked fine from then on.

Setup samba shares in fstab

I think thats about it. Everything basically worked from the get go!
Good job on knoppmyth!!

Post subject:  How'd you make that dongle?

Any change I can convince you to post the details of the connections you made to create the dongle?

Thanks,
David
