2012?

Seriously though, a word to the wise, this type of question is almost never welcome. It's the equivalent of the youngsters in the back seat asking "are we there yet?" While the question may seem vitally important to the person making the query, it's main effect is to annoy the rest of the people in the car.

When Cecil has something ready or a schedule in mind he'll announce it. Since he hasn't made an announcement ...

I've been around the forum for a little while, it seems every few months someone asks "When is the next release?" The reply is always some form of "Don't ever ask that again" Now while it's been a while since I've done a definitive search, I don't recall seeing anything on any of the forum or wiki pages indicating this "Rule" of the forum.

Now as a software engineer, I can confirm that 100% of the software developers I have EVER worked with HATE being "constantly pinged for status" Still, I find the analogy flawed. It's like kids asking "are we there yet?" when the driver refuses to say where they're going or even give the slightest idea how long the trip will take. Given a bus full of people in the car, I think you'll find the passenger's annoyance split between the kids AND the driver. Also, being compared to a child, and an annoying child at that, is not the most flattering way of welcoming a new user.

I fully understand that this entire project is a 'labor of love' and I am 100% behind Cecil and all the contributors, and grateful for their efforts. I understand that any resources spent on maintaining status are NOT spent on building the distro. But still, it's hard to deny that this is one of the most close-lipped open-source projects in the world. I don't think publishing a "roadmap" would kill anyone. Specific dates do not need to be included; most projects put it in terms of quarters, or approximate cycles (say 6 month). Even if dates were included and missed, we all understand "Stuff Happens." Anyone who doesn't get that fact can be flamed as nasty as possible.

At the very least, this "Unwritten Rule" needs to become written. Best place would be on the forum index page.

For me I don't care when the next release comes as much as your "tips and tricks" post. <joke> any idea when that's comming? </joke>

I completely understand, having a degree in computer science and being a game designer, that it is very annoying to ask when the next release is going to take place...

I did not mean it out of disrespect and I have been around Knoppmyth and reading the forums for a very long time. The reason that I asked this is because R6 was suppose to make its debut at SCALE 6X according to the news, as shown by the news below...

"10-30-07
As you can see by the link on the left, KnoppMyth has been invited to SCALE 6X! This will be KnoppMyth's fourth year at SCALE! R6 will makes it's official debut at SCALE 6X, Dale and I hope to see you there so we can hand you a copy."

TJC, I believe that I have a perfectly valid reason to asked this question because of that announcement that you obviously think I don't read, and because I live in Illinois and cannot pick up a copy for myself.

About making a release schedule, I believe that knoppmyth, being one of the top PVRs should have one. I run Fedora 8 and they have a release schedule. So, if you don't want people asking you these types of questions, there is a simple solution.

I wouldn't expect R6 until Myth .21 is out. I'm no one and I don't know for sure, but it makes sense to hold off until that time.

To the best of my understanding R6 did not debut as hoped because it simply wasn't ready, and the SCALE 6X version was based on the latest R5 testing version.

The CD versions used for various events like SCALE are often not released publicly, and are best considered limited distribution development snapshots rather than normal releases. Thus, unless you were there to get a CD, there is no valid source.

Finally, I'm not at liberty to say more, even about what was on the SCALE 6X CD, because like Fight Club the first rule of KnoppMyth Testing is that you don't talk about it. :-|

R6 is still a ways off. I'll leave it to Cecil or Dale to comment on what it will mean.

The next release (pre-R6) will have the latest MythTV release 0.21, updated kernel and drivers, updated setup and configuration scripts, updated versions of the various packages like mplayer, xine, lirc, ... however, this is pretty much the same story as for any KnoppMyth release.

If I was developing KnoppMyth I would be both honoured and horrified to be compared to Fedora.

Honoured as Fedora due to its reputation and the status of the product.

Horrified as if you expect a single person to be able to hit the standards of such a project, I would like to quote a line from a famous Australian movie, "Tell'm he's dreaming"

I don't see myself as competing with Fedora. Nor any other distro. I simply want to do the best job I can at making KnoppMyth the best it can possibly be. This wouldn't be possible without all those that contribute to the project, and those that help to test. I'm proud of the work I've done and the community that has formed around it.

Now, you will see me talk about KnoppMyth's superiority. That is simply because I think we have a superior product. While "MythTV based distros" may have a thing or two that makes them shine, I don't believe as a whole there is a finer solution than KnoppMyth.

KnoppMyth was the first distro that made the MythTV as a appliance possible. KnoppMyth as been around longer than Ubuntu. As long as I'm able, I'll continue to try my best to make KnoppMyth better and better with each release.

At no time was I implying that you are a competing product to Fedora, just that being in the same company as them would be an honour.

But you are right, KnoppMyth stands alone as a product and whilst there are other "products" that share functionality, it is a product that stands Heads and Shoulders above the rest.

Long Live Cecil, Long Live KnoppMyth.
