Features of the modern backup and restore scripts:
tjc: Thanks for the extremely well written post! I, and no doubt many others, appreciate all the time and effort you put in to making things crystal clear! It's a pleasure to read and understand! I know it takes a long time to crank out a post that is so organized and detailed, yet sounds like you are talking off the cuff! Thanks again :!:

tjc: do the backup scripts check if a recording is currently taking place, or is there any way of doing so?

I ran a backup (mainly to check that digital audio was working with the backup sounds) but did so during a recording, with the effect that it split my recording in two when it turned off and then back on mythbackend.

The backup script doesn't check, but that is what idle.sh is for. Search back up this thread for the deep backup script for an example of how to use it. Also see the following thread for the origins of idle.sh http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=17988

Please see this post for some more things to be aware of: http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=113234#113234

In summary, the backups require and try to enforce an "idle" system state while they're running, but there are any number of ways for people to naively violate this requirement. :(

I am making substantial hardware changes so I would like to do a fresh install but II would like to keep all my recordings. Am reading this correctly that I can copy the recordings from the old /myth to the new /myth and restore the two backup files?

I am going from r5f27 to r5.5 so if I have read correctly the backup scheme is the same.

This is a FAQ, a quick search should find scores of discussions of this topic. I've personally documented my own upgrade process and talked other people through a dozen different variations. There are even a couple wiki page on transferring your media files to a new drive and/or new machine.

For example:
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=HardDriveUpgrade
http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=19307
http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10195

Useful search terms:

dd - many people recommend using it to do an image copy of the drive (I do not, it's a bad idea for several reasons).
rsync - one of the methods I do recommend
"cp -a" - recursive archive mode copy.
fdisk - partioning the drive
mkfs - setting up the filesystem on the new partition
gparted - another way of repartitioning
