I was answering a post the other night and referenced one of my HOWTO guides which kinda got me thinking: how many of these have I written? I did the search and found that the answer was nearly 30! I decided to put together an index of them in one thread... a bit shameless I know, but here we are! Most of these are self-explanatory based on the titles.

Note that I have will be updating these guides to work with R6 once it goes final and supersedes R5.5. (Don't worry, I won't delete the originals, but I will offer both in the same post).

If you see a lightbulb icon ( ) in front of the link, it has been re-written or written to work with R6. If you see an exclamation mark ( :!: ) in front of the guide, it *should* be of a general nature be applicable w/ R6 albeit, the commands will need to be converted over to the R6 syntax (such as pat-get --> pacman -S or /etc/init.d/samba restart --> sudo sv restart smbd nmbd, etc.) Please PM me if you feel otherwise.

GeneralTips
Not full-blown HOWTO guides, but a little tidbit

Restarting Samba under R6
Burning an ISO from the shell (or an ssh session)
Improving system responsiveness

Currently Applicable HOWTO Guides
System Migration
 HOWTO: Move a fully functional LinHES install from an IDE hdd to a SATA hdd without reinstalling!

System Monitoring/System Control
 HOWTO: Install Monitorix on R6 - Monitorix is a very lightweight system monitoring application logging data such as CPU temp, MB temp, HDD temp, network throughput, filesystems, users, and much more. This Howto describes how to install it on R6.
 HOWTO:CPU fan RPM control on-demand with pwmconfig - If you have a modern motherboard, odds are that you have the ability to vary the speed of your CPU's fan based on your CPU temp.

Network Filesharing
HOWTO: Connect Windows to KM to share files via Samba
HOWTO: Connect KM to Windows to share files via Samba - Useful if you have content stored on your windows machine and want mythtv to see it.
HOWTO: Enable jumbo frames to speed-up file-xfers on your LAN - If you have Giglan hardware (1000 Mbps NICs) that support jumbo frames (and a switch), you can probably get a bit more bandwidth out of your LAN.

XFS File System
:!: XFS Speed Hints-Measure % fragmentation and defrag your XFS partition
:!: XFS Maintenance - read if you're new to XFS

Secure Communications
:!: HOWTO: Secure vnc or mythweb via ssh tunnels to keep your box hacker-free - MUST READ if you plan to access your KM box from outside your LAN or if your home LAN is wireless!

Remotely Accessing KM/LinHES
:!: HOWTO: Run vncserver for totally parallel sessions to KM/LinHES - This is pretty cool if you would like to have some non-mythtv GUI programs running on your KM box.
HOWTO: Remotely Access Mythtv from Windows (xsession) - Old school but still useful.
HOWTO: Speed-up sshd authentication
:!: HOWTO: Turn on your mythtvbox remotely via WOL (Wake On Lan)

Video Playback
:!: HOWTO: Compile mplayer - UPDATE 09-Aug-2008 - In some cases, the out-of-the-box mplayer has hang-ups. This guide shows you how to compile one to fix them.

Hardware Related
 HOWTO: Install memtest86+ on your R6 box and boot into it without a CD
HOWTO: Configure a wireless card (WPA2 or WEP) on KM
:!: HOWTO: Seagate 7200.11 HDDs - read to prevent DATA LOSS! - MUST READ if you own an 11th generation Seagate drive!
 HOWTO: CPU cooling/power reduction for some AMD chips
HOWTO: Enable DMA and improve HD speeds - Kinda obsolete w/ most system being SATA these days, but many folks (including myself) put KM/LinHES on older hardaware so still a good read.

P2P File Sharing on KM
HOWTO: Install Moblock on R5.5 (LINIX PeerGuardian cousin)
HOWTO: TorrentFlux on R5.5 (headless www remote bittorrent)
HOWTO: Install amule on R5.5 (LINUX emule client)

nothing wrong with that. You deserve credit for your contributions. It is the kind of thing that makes this community work.

I do quite a number over at contribs.org for SME server as well. Including a mythtv integration to that server.

How-to's really help people get started even if their situation is different.

Thank-you.

Christ.

Can we get this pinned or possibly converted to wiki articles?

This is great work and a tribute to your efforts.

Hi graysky!

Always nice to have a list of handy things around. Thank you for putting them all in one spot as there were a couple I had forgotten about! :)

I for one, appreciate your work. I suspect many others do also.
Thanks
Mike

You hit the nail on the head. This is the major driver for me spending the time to write up the guides. It's nice to know folks are actually using them too :)

Just wanted to let the community know that I will be updating these guides (well some of them) for use with R6. See the first thread of the post for details. I'll be updating it over the next few weeks so check back if interested.
