What version works on 8.1?

310.19

Hasn't caused any stability problems I've noticed. Maybe gpu/vdpau performance is not quite as good as my old 6.04 install?

I'm a little more familiar with arch than the mysterious scripts of LinHES, I can probably cope with a few pkgbuilds.

I might have to find something that will run a stable 8.3 first...

Grayskys modified pkgbuilds 404.... Maybe a modified LinHES one would be better? http://cgit.linhes.org/linhes_pkgbuild/tree/abs

The problem is with ACPI on the ASUS M3N78-EM. What to do? try something like this

options nvidia NVreg_EnableMSI=0

or

pci=nomsi

or

change grub

8.3 installed

Same as here: http://forums.linhes.org/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=24164&start=15#p139796

Install from CD with forced vesa drivers.

As suggested by Racer X /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf containing

Code:
options nvidia NVreg_EnableMSI=0

Then install nvidia drivers....

Glad to see that you finally got it working, excellent!!! The onboard Nvidia 8300 of the ASUS M3N78-EM has a problem with ACPI, it doesn't support the MSI scheme that is now enabled by default in the Nvidia Driver. I recommend that you post ASUS M3N78-EM as Tier 2 hardware. You will have to use the workaround going forward to disable the MSI scheme in the Nvida driver.

Code:
options nvidia NVreg_EnableMSI=0

How are the graphics now that it's disabled?

In my case (Video Playback Profile of OpenGL High Quality, on an AMD Athlon(tm) X2 Dual Core Processor 3250e);

  • SD was good, with low CPU usage, but
  • Any HD (either MPEG2 or H264) will stutter, low frame rate, etc.

Tried Slim next;
  • SD displayed a de-interlacing tear in horizontal panning that I didn't see before. Like the de-int wasn't sync'd to frame refresh
  • HD pretty good. Slight de-interlace tear.
  • H-264 HD (9HD) kept up, but sound cut out briefly every second or so. Some de-interlace tear

High Quality was about the same, just higher CPU usage which couldn't keep up in some HD source.

Last, Normal. Minimal tearing in SD. Some in HD, but basically kept up.
