System was running fine. R8.3 and decided to update.
update finished waited about 10 minutes then rebooted the machine. The only thing that looked odd was:
Code:
  -> Running build hook: [autodetect]
find: âsortâ terminated by signal 9
modprobe: ERROR: missing parameters. See -h.

On reboot I got these messages and the keyboard is not active.
Code:

Ran a ISO upgrade from LinHES_R8.4.3.iso
After the upgrade the system booted fine and worked until I did an
pacman -Syu

Now I'm back at:
Code:
:: running early hook [udev]
starting version 224
:: running hook [udev]
:: Triggering uevents...
:: running hook [v86d]
:: running hook [plymouth]
:: Loading plymouth...done

mount: can't find UUID=dbc0dd9c-eb92-4070-8acb-a0b4ccc11177
You are now being dropped into emergency shell.
sh: can't acces tty; job control turned off
rootfs /]#

Or some similar verbiage.

Rerunning an ISO update.

I saw something similar to that on a really old box a few years back. I think I ended up having to edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and in the HOOKS line move block in front of autodetect and then rebuild the the initramfs with mkinitcpio -p linux. Do that after you update but before rebooting.

Ran the LinHES_R8.4.3.iso upgrade again. And have a functioning system. I had to make a few changes to get the HD_PVR working again.

haup-ir-blaster.bin is not included in on the iso. I had to download haup-ir-blaster.bin
and put it into [b] /usr/lib/firmware/ [/b

I looks like a lirc_zilog is now included in the kernel so had to
modprobe hdpvr to load the firmware and it automatically loaded lirc_zilog

Not quite sure what to do about getting updates.

So after the update the /etc/mkinitcpio.conf will look different than the current one?
Here is the current one after the ISO install.
Code:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems keyboard fsck v86d plymout
h"

# COMPRESSION
# Use this to compress the initramfs image. By default, gzip compression
# is used. Use 'cat' to create an uncompressed image.
#COMPRESSION="gzip"
#COMPRESSION="bzip2"
#COMPRESSION="lzma"
#COMPRESSION="xz"
#COMPRESSION="lzop"
#COMPRESSION="lz4"

# COMPRESSION_OPTIONS
# Additional options for the compressor
#COMPRESSION_OPTIONS=""

The update should not change the mkinitcpio.conf. After you update and before you reboot you can try moving block ahead of autodetect. Not sure it will work but it was something that did work for me before.

Also, haup-ir-blaster.bin is part of the zilog-firmware pkg.

If the mkinitcpio.conf doesn't change, I take it that the iso install does not run mkinitcpio -p linux
Would that be correct?

The install does build the initramfs and anytime the kernel is updated it is rebuilt too. My theory is that something in the new kernel and your hardware is causing the issue and maybe moving the mkinitcpio hooks around might fix it.

I guess my question is if the ISO
Quote:
install does build the initramfs
why did it succeed, and not fail like the update does?

Willing to give it a try next time I can schedule a maintenance window.

Thanks

Because the version of the kernel in the ISO (4.4.something) and the version of the kernel in the release repos (4.9.something) are different. My guess is something with the newer kernel doesn't like your hardware.
