That was a very clear explanation, but I'm getting a very unhelpful error message.

I've tried it using the WINS name and the IP address but both ways I get the same message:

4537: Connection to user:pass@192.168.1.103 failed
SMB connection failed

and yes, I did use the correct user and password for the Win2K box, I just changed them for posting here. That 4537 seems to be just an incrementing number. It changes each time I run the smbmount command. It might be a PID, but I'm pretty sure it's not an error number.

One thing to try switching is the encrypted password option in /etc/samba/smb.conf file.

If you edit that file with vi, or another editor, you should find a line something like:
Code:
 encrypt passwords = yes

'yes' may be 'no' of course, and you may find that toggling this will make a difference. (i.e. if it says no, change to yes, and vice vesa.)

Another thing to check is that the workgroup or domain is the same. In the same file, look for the 'workgroup =' line, and see if you canmake sure that the workgroup name, or domain name matches what you have set up in XP.

There is also an option to set your system up as the domain controller. I am not sure whether this is impacting your setup or not.

(Best if you only make one change at a time)

After making any of those changes, restart samba with the command
Code:
/etc/init.d/smb restart

then try re-connecting.

You can also test from the command line along the lines of:
Code:
smbmount //server/ShareName mountpoint -o username=winusername,password=winuserpassword

I would recomend giving the server a name, and putting that name in your /etc/hosts file. That way you cna specify the name of the server, rather than the IP address.

Pretty much the only thing I can think of left would be if there were a case sensitivity for the sharename, such that //servername/Mp3 did not match //servername/mP3.

One way to check a lot of this out is to use the LinNeighborhood program. I don't think it is installed by default, but 'apt-get install LinNeighborhood' should get it installed to your system. Using that you can brows your network neighborhood, find what domains appear to be part of your netowkr, and find the various shares you have created on the various servers. You can even dicate where to mount things, and build the necessary mount scripts with the tool.

Hope this is of some help.

Ok, after changing the encrypt passwords and workgroup settings in /etc/samba/smb.conf and running /etc/init.d/samba restart after each change I still was getting a timeout error.

I fired up Ethereal on the Win2K box and saw that there was SMB traffic, but I couldn't figure out what was wrong. On a whim, I disabled the application firewall on the Win2K box. As soon as I did that the smbmount command succeeded. Then I re-enabled the application firewall and connectivity was maintained. I was able to transfer a file from KnoppMyth to the Win2K box.

I'm still confused, though. The software is Tiny Personal Firewall and it has a setting specifically to allow Windows file sharing. It has never prevented either my or my girlfriend's Windows laptops from accessing that share.

Anyway, it's working now with the firewall enabled, so it must be something to do with Samba not intitiating a connection in quite the "approved Microsoft way"
