going through the setup program.

but i cant seem to get the job finished.

after i escape out of the setup.. it reboots the front end.. and takes me to mythtv.

but when i click on watch tv.. it says "unable to connect to master backend.. is it running? is the ip address for it in the setup program correct?"

well.. in the setup i just used the default ip's.. i dont have multiple front ends or anything.. everythings just on the one machine..? .. um... dont know what question to ask...

i tried exiting the program and typing mythtv from xterm.. it says "connecting to backend server: 127.0.0.1:6543 (try 1 of 5)
connection timed out
you probably should modify the master server settings in the setup program and set the proper ip address.

um.. ok.. so.. i dont know what that means?... given that im running both the front and backends on the same machine.. um.. yeah..

any help would be great :D .. thanks

oh.. figured i should ask another question here as well.. rather than starting a new thread. um.. when i run scantv ... it doesnt find any channels.. but i can happilly watch tv using xawtv when i start it up from the fluxbox apps menu? .. er.. does that mean that my tv card isnt configured properly? ... and if so.. specifically how do i edit the /etc/mythtv.modules.bttv file to option bttv card=34? ... like.. specifically how do i do that?... um.. im using the pinnacle pctv card... which uses the bt868 chipset... so presumably the bttv driver...(is card 34 correct?) sorry.. ive never used linux before.. obviously :D ... finally.. and again specifically.. how do i install the nvidia drivers? .. i typed install-nvidia.sh at xterm.. but it gave an error?...

heaps of questions there.. letme know if i shouldve broken them up and i will for next time.. thanks heaps for help :D ..cheers.

steve

Try install-nvidia<tab>
Pressing Tab will auto complete the command for you. I think the version name is in the command. If there is more than one auto complete option it will beep when you press tab. Pressing tab again will show a list of options and you can type more so that you get a unique completion.

That should answer the nvidia bit.

Also, I think scan is only something that you do with DVB cards. This is because a DVB frequency can transmit multiple channels on the one transport, and the scan part detects the channels that are bing transmitted on a given frequency (known as a transport). With a normal analog tuner card (which I think yours is but i'm not sure), the only important thing for a channel is the frequency. Thats why xawtv works. It just tunes to the frequency and you can see the channel. With Myth tv, you need to enter the frequency for each channel manually. Run mythtv-setup in an xterm and setup your card, the create a video source called "television" or something. then associate the video source with your card in the input connections bit and then enter frequencies in the channels bit. After doing all of that, you should be cooking with myth (because if xawtv works, you probably already have the appropriate modules loaded with the appropriate tuner setting).

super... thanks greg.. see im learning already :D ... i did type install-nv<tab><tab> .. but after that i just hit enter.. i didnt realise that all that part did was to bring up the options that i had to then actually type in.. so cheers.

and yeah.. its just a standard defination card.. cheep.. is a trial so i can see what i can do.. will get a hd one when i get this working :D

as for the entering the channel frequencies?.. um.. how do i do that..ive a created the video sourse.. then associated it with the card in input connections.. and then i head to the channel editor...

at the point when i entered the video source name.. changed the xmltv listings grabber to australia. alt tab and choose the relivent region options.. (sydney and free to air) .. then it goes away and finds the channels.. theres a few errors there..like no icon found for free.sydney.9! .. but all the rest i hit yes to add...

the config box is kind enough to say all done, run with no arguements to grab listings. cool.

um.. so then i click on channel editor.. and add a new channel..

enter channel name, number, video sourse, format all fine..

whats callsign? .. and whats rank?

i didnt bother with an icon, no filters. (what are the filters?)

do i need to add an xmltv id? ... and if so.. what ? ... ie.. what does this mean.

i hit next and go to the frequency id... what should i put there? ... i left it blank and went back to the channels screen.

i can sort channels.. and there are two boxes at the bottom.. saying scan for channels and advanced.. though both of them are blanked out.. so i cant click on them.. so all i can do is hit escape...

so.. um.. how/ where do i enter the channel frequencys.. and do i just do a google search to find the frequencys for each channel.

thanks heaps for your reply...

steve

If you are in the us and you are doing standard ntsc either ota or cable all you need to do is create the video source from data direct and associated with the proper input in input connections. you don't need to even look at the channel editor. If you don't know how to get signed up with zap2it(data direct) then you need to RTFM again.

well sorry don't know much about tv over there other than it's odd and seemingly a real pita to setup. you might want to search the forums and the wiki. I didn't even realize a normal tv card would work for you guys over there.

lol... true.. we are backwards... but we do have tv here ... cars as well :D ...ive searched the forum.. but havent been able to find the right thread for me... they all seem to gloss over the bits that i dont understand... but theres loads of sydney siders on the forum.. so someone will be able to help...

im more worried about the "could not connect to the master backend server -- is it running? is the ip address set for it in the setup program correctly" ...

err.. i just used the defaults for the ips.. so im not sure what thats all about.

most likely mean that the backend is not running. you could do
ps -ae | grep myth
from the console to find out. If it's not I don't really think it's a big deal as I believe your channels not being set properly may be preventing it from starting.

mythphone just grabs a video input in this case you don't have a camera, so it's just grabbing the tv input.

try putting the -ae switch on that command like I said.

here's what mine looks like
Code:
root@mythtv:~# ps -ae | grep myth
 3150 ?        00:30:34 mythbackend
 4382 ?        02:36:03 mythfrontend
root@mythtv:~#

ps -ae | grep myth
3493 ? 00.00.09 mythfrontend
root@mythtv:~#

so... yeah... no backend?

so i guess the backend aint doing its thing... thoughts? um.. i dont even know what a backend is compared to the frontend.. novice remember :D .. so ive got like no clue on how to solve this

thanks

steve

in an xterm window type
Code:
mythbackend
this will start the backend and write message to the window. if is has issues, you will see the errors.

VERY simply, the backend is the piece that manages the recording (video capture, scheduling). The frontend is the part with the user interface that allows viewing the video. User uses the frontend to 'ask' the backend to send it video.

some people run the frontend and backend on the same box. others have very complex, mutlibox enviroments.

If the frontend process can not communicate with the backend...no joy.

i dont know what that means... but hopefully one of you guys does :D .. wanta explain it to me? or at least tell me the significance.

cheers

oh... i am running a tiny hdd.. only 6gig. but during the partition stage of setup.. knoppmyth said there was 2gig avaliable to save tv.... i say this cause my first guess when i saw the above was that i was out of disk space.. my second guess is that perhaps the partitions have not been setup correctly in the bios? .. ive never partitioned a drive before..so i presumed that the bios wouldnt need changing as there is only one physical drive.
