Well here goes my first post after reading this forum for over a week and still no joy...
I am in the same boat as you my friend I can not seem to get the backend going either, I do not think you hard drive size is the issue I am running a 160 Gig and errors are identical to yours.
You may want to just check to make sure that the directories do exist and that you have four partiotions.
I am new to Linux as well so maybe we can help each other out.... along with all of the fine minds on this site.
Very nice place you guy's have here
edit: Also when I get to the section where you configure the card in Myth no card is listed I have to click add new card and pick one from the list?? Are you seeing the same, is this normal?

its normal to need to add a new card on setup... actually im kinda glad someone has the same problem as i do
ive managed to find several posts regarding similar issues.. but none of them seem to have solutions... the only one that does says not to create a user called mythtv.. which is fine.. but i havent created a mythtv user.. so that doesnt help much.
ive reinstalled heaps.. so... given that i install the same way as everyone else.. there must be an easy solution right?
i thought maybe this post was relevant.. so i kinda tried running the commands.. only using /myth/tv as the directory... but that did nothing.

I had just gotten done reading that thread as well and I am not in front of my box to test it but I know I DID install with a user "MythTv" so I am knocking on wood here that this may be my issue
Hey did you check your partitions and the directories?
My first install just to see what I could get done was with a 4 Gig and it only made 3 partitions I guess that drive was just too small might be something for you to check out
So if I am reading all this correctly when the back and frountend are installed on the same machine you should leave the default local IP address in the setup? Is that how you are reading this??
Thanks

I have the backend issue as well. My IP address defaulted to: localhost
should it not be localhost? should it be something else?

This is most likely your problem I believe it makes 4 partiotions (someone please correct me if I am wrong) I think your HD is too small but that may not be your core issue.
Hel* Yea I got mine working by not useing the mythtv user name in the setup

lol.... well... at least progress is been made
i guess you just need to tune you channels now. try running xawtv .. its nice and simple.. and if you can see tv on that.. at least you know your tuner card is doing something..
i dont have a bigger hdd around.. so i guess ill have to pop out an get one. though im still not convinced its the core of the issue.
but i do have 4 partitions... hda1, hda2, hda3 and hda4 ... thats right yeah?

Stevearama: If you type the command Code: df it will give you a summary of the mounted partitions and the available space on each of the partitions. I don't know for sure, but depending on the way that knoppmyth selects the size for the hda3 (/cache) partition, it may be that there is not enough room for an effective hda4 (/myth) partition. If this is the problem, you may be able to get around it by manually allocating the partitions (manual install), but given you are a bit of a newb, its probably easier to just buy a hard disk. Believe me, you will not regret it. Knoppmyth is cool. BTW. hda2 is the swap partition that will not appear using the df command. try Code: cat /proc/swaps

thanks greg... and cheers for the polite "bit of a newby" comment ... made me chuckle.
yeah im getting a new hdd... and other stuff as well.
ok.. so did the df command.
/dev/hda1 = 2034404k blocks - used = 1275616, used = 67% mounted on /
/dev/hda3 = 2100008k blocks - used = 24, 1% /cache
/dev/hda4 = 1271328k blocks - used = 3% /myth.
thats an abbreviated version of what linux returned.
the partition drive - size = 864664, used 2092, priority = -1
so there is space there.. though i guess only cesman will be able to say
when i type 'mythbackend' from the root user, the error is:
/myth/tv/nfslockfile.lock: no space left on device
unable to open lockfile!
be sure that '/myth/tv/ exists (done that.. it exists) and that files are writable by this user. (how do i ensure that this is true?).
i guess that file is larger than the space avaliable on that partition? .. but theres like 1gig avaliable .. so i cant see that as the cause.
could it be other hardware issues? .. or is it a software environment thing.
thanks.

The lock file is only tiny 0 bytes.
Do this:
Code: ls -lad /myth /myth/tv
and post the results. That will show the ownership and permissions on both the /myth and /myth/tv directories. Then as the mythtv user, go into the /myth/tv directory and try to create a file and see if you get an error. Code: cd /myth/tv touch dummy_filename

thanks for your reply greg ..will never dis people from adelaid again :p
ok.. did that
root@tv:~# ls -lad /myth /myth/tv
drwxr-xr-x 13 root root 4096 may 11 09:19 /myth
drwxrwxr-x 2 mythtv mythtv 4096 may 11 09:19 /myth/tv
root@tv:~# cd /myth/tv
root@tv:/myth/tv# touch dummy_filename
touch: cannot touch "dummy_filename" : No space left on device
root@tv:/myth/tv#
ace... i learnt to change directories
im hoping the drwxr-xr etc is significant.
thanks.steve

so i figured it was time for some independent learning.. thanks google
im thinking that only the mythtv user has premission to write to the /myth/tv directory... ie root doesnt. ... um.. i made a user called steve in the knoppmyth setup.. shouldnt that be there too?
i guess i just need to give the user root access.. then im away.
i did this:
root@tv:/# chmod o+w /myth/tv
now the list command showns that /myth/tv is drswrswrsw...
i was thinking yay... but when i type mythbackend from the root user.. i get the same "no space left" error.
my issue is.. why has this happened to me and (almost) noone else?.. i didnt create a user called mythtv? .. and.. um.. well thats the only explaination ive seen on the board for whats happening.?.. is that a reasonable question?
