It looks like in my Asus A7V333 RAID mb, the new kernel decided that the onboard promise controller I don't use has to be my main controller... so the same drive attacched to the integrated IDE controller that has been hda for the last six months has became hde, I found myself unable to auto upgrade and I even decided to trash my set up in a clumsy attempt for a manual install.

A few questions for somebody who found himself in the same situation:

- is there a way to force the drive back to hda?
- otherwise, assuming I can manage to install correctly to hde, would it remain hde once I boot from hd instead of cd
- am I wrong If I think that eventually a newer version could switch the drive back to hda? Would that complicate upgrading or it would allow me to do a regular auto upgrade has if nothing had happened?

Thanks
Luca

Disable the controller in your BIOS. Depending on you BIOS< you may also be able to specify which devices it should boot first. You can not do an auto anything, this only works with /dev/hda. You can do a manual install then, rm -fr .configure && touch .upgrade. Then simply restart fluxbox (you probably want to enter the wrong password before you restart fluxbox).

cesman,

Could you elaborate more on this? Where is .configure? After you do the manual install with ".upgrade", do you need to do anything manually to move configuration information back over from the backup directory?

All this should take place in /home/mythtv. That is about all the elaboration you need. Just follow the instructions and it should just work...

Just for reference for people with the same problem: changing bios settings had no effect and I had to disable the RAID controller via dip switch on the MB itself.

...I mean I don't really need RAID on a htpc and it now seem to boot much faster! I'll probably disable firewire and usb if it speeds things up!!!

Thanks
Luca

Just for future reference, the linux kernel has a boot time option that straightens this out. If you boot with the following sequence:

linux ide=reverse

the drives will be flip-flopped, i.e. hde becomes hda and vice-versa, each drive in between flips also. It's trivial to add this to lilo so it sticks and gets used at boot time by editing /etc/lilo.conf and putting it in the boot options for your kernel. Something along the lines of append "ide=reverse".
