What's the default network settings for the KnoppMyth R5A26 boot CD? Are there any? I want to use the disk as a not-quite-emergency boot disk, but I've already got the backend in a closet with thousands of cables, and don't want to drag a monitor, keyboard, etc over there.

Can I ssh into a machine running the boot disk? So what would be the IP address and default user/pass?

Yeah, I could also download and burn a real emergency boot disk, and maybe I'll have to if I don't get help here. Cool, thanks.

There is no default network settings, just run netcardconfig. There is no default password for the root or the knoppix user. Of course, you do know what the MythTV password is right?

Yeah, but I can't run netcardconfig or ifconfig or anything elese until I can ssh into the box, which I can't do until I know what the already-burned-to-CD IP address is. The passwords will be useful, though.

Of course the easy way is really the hard way -- connect a keyboard and monitor -- but I'm trying to avoid that on principle.

In any case, it's no big deal. I can download and burn a pre-configured Linux boot disk. I just though maybe Knoppymyth could serve that purpose, too. Actually now that I think of it, my Xebian disk will probably work, and I know its IP address!

The KnoppMyth disk can serve this purpose. I don't know of any "rescue CD" that is preconfigured with a specific IP schme. Simply put, it really doesn't make much sense for a "rescue CD" to come hardwired with a specific IP.

Yeah... it's not really a rescue CD, but it makes sense. For example, the Xebian CD defaults to 192.168.0.10 / 255.255.255.0 and maybe a router address in the config, too. It makes sense for Xebian because it's intended for an XBox, which is unlikely to have a keyboard and mouse so ssh'ing is normal. Likewise my backend server doesn't have a keyboard or mouse, nor a monitor, so for certain types of operations, a bootable disk with a pre-configured ip address would be handy.

If you log into the router and look at the "attached devices", you should discover it. If it's an issue of what it's assigned on regular boot vs. the CD, it's probably the same if you don't have other machines logging in while you reboot. Or you could assign a static IP address on the router, based on the MAC address of the NIC. That way, no matter what it boots as, it'll get the same IP if using DHCP.

Oh yeah, I always forget that my router's there -- it just works so perfectly that I always kind of ignore it! I always use static networking typically, so another obvious choice is to turn back on DHCP... then my XBoxes will self configure, too.
