1) Are there any benifits of going to a 2.6 kernel for a HTPC machine?

2) Have any of you upgraded your knoppmyth box to 2.6?

3) Will knoppmyth R5 have a 2.6 kernel?

Just curious (And sorry if this is a repost but I didn't find much on this topic with search).

Thanks for your insight,
jpummill

Well a few, but most can be accomplished with a 2.4 kernel. First is preempt (there is a patch for 2.4, but it is standard in 2.6) second and the big one in my mind is local apic in 2.6 can be turned off by a boot parameter whereas it cannot in 2.4. One other small one that pops into my head is there has been lots of talk of sensors lately, and 2.6 has the lmsensor modules built in without patching.

back when I had knoppmyth R3 I had it upgraded to 2.6, but I have been running the stock kernel since then.

well I am not a dev, so I cannot answer this one, but from the vibe I get on the forums I would have to guess no.

I updated my Knoppmyth box to kernel 2.6 because I was having problems witth the support of my Motherboard in 2.4. However, I've got new bttv problems I didn't have in 2.4. Also, there is no official support for LIRC in 2.6. I downloaded some patches to make it work, but I'm still working on it.
