I install the second machine using R5B7 frontend install but once I reboot the machine it asks me to reinstall again. Doesnt it write to the mbr telling it to bypass the install portion once a reboot occurs?

Has anyone had sucess installing the full knoppmyth then converting it to a frontend machine only. Ive tried it and it cant find any recordings or I cant watch tv. But all works perfectly when I use the frontend install option during install.

??? Did you take the CD out before rebooting? Or are you talking about the 2nd phase installer that prompts you for the root password to finish the setup?

I install the knoppmyth R5B7 version and choose frontend. Then let the install go through then it boots up the frontend without a reboot which is fine. Then i will reboot the machine without the cd inside and it just shows 111 and 00's then I put the cd back inside and it will start the install all over again.

The frontend option is to allow you to run from the CD as a frontend (client) of an existing backend (server) system. For example, if you had a KnoppMyth system in the living room and wanted to watch something on a laptop that normally runs some other OS upstairs in the office.

If you want to set up a system that can record and playback content on it's own you need to use one of the install options.

Maybe I wrote it wrong.. too many hours on the pc lol.. I have a standalone backend system which is working perfect. Only problem is I have a second system which Im now trying to make my frontend and I cant seem to get it going.

I have tried 2 ways:

1) Install an entire copy on the hard drive (which is what I want) usinag the manual install option then within mythtv-setup have it point to my backend system mysql server. I had this going in R5A30.2 btw. It keeps giving me errors when trying to watch live tv like couldnt open and also when trying to watch recorded programs it cant find directory /myth/tv even though the nfs shares are working properly on my backend. The reason for wanting to install full copy on the frontend is so I can install an Ir receiver on it and have a remote with it.

2) I then tried to select frontend install which brings the entire system up and everything works perfect live tv works, watching recorded programs works even scheduling records from the frontend works. BUT I cant install the ir receiver beucase now it runs off of a CD and when I reboot the system doesnt come up without the CD inside. AND if I put the cd inside it wants to start another installation. There should be a bit of code placed into the MBR telling the cd to bypass the install part and go directly into running the mythfrontend but I guess there isnt.

Is it poissble to tell knoppmyth to install the exact image of the frontend install onto my hard drive and then do away with my cd becuase this is exactly what I want.

There is no "frontend only install" as far as I'm aware.

Ya too bad eh but Im still puzzled as to why when i install it to the hard drive I'm not able to connect to the backend or watch any shows even though it connects to the database perfectly.

Did you do the things to the backend that you need to do to the backend in order to let a frontend work with it?

After endless hours of googling Ive found that you do have to redo all the settings once you reboot the pc. Im sure that later versions will change this. I guess I need to try a network boot.

As far as installing it locally then connecting the two machines I still get the errors:

Code:

Many others are getting the exact same problems. Im going to try and file a ticket on the issue.

Are you still talking about running the frontend off the knoppmyth CD? Of corse you have to redo the settings everytime. Why did you need to spend hours googling to find this out. You could have just read the knoppmyth documentation.

Yes i followed the instructions to a tee. I am able to view the program guide from the frontend and also I am able to read and write to the nfs shares that are being broadcast from the backend machine. This seems like a bug within the software. I have successfully setup the previous two versions Release 5 Alpha 30.2, and Release 5 Alpha 30.1 in the same manner and all was fine.
Does anyone else use R5B7 with a backend and frontend on seperate machines?

Here is the knoppmyth documentation on the frontend install:
Frontend

Code:
This allows you to use the CD as a frontend if you have a MythTV backend previously set up.

Using the CD as a frontend is dependent on the backend having already been configured with MySQL listening on the network. If you are running Knoppmyth as your backend server, you can configure it as follows:

1. Edit /etc/mysql/my.cnf and comment out 'skip-networking'.

Before: skip-networking
After: # skip-networking

2. Note that the backend will only accept the mythtv user with a password of mythtv.

3. Restart MySQL as root by opening an Xterm window and typing:

su
/etc/init.d/mysql restart
exit

4. As the mythtv user, reconfigure mythtv. In the Xterm window from step 3 above, type:

mythtv-setup

On the first screen of MythTV setup, change both instances of the loopback IP number (127.0.0.1) to the actual IP number of the backend server. Then press ESC to exit mythtv-setup, and restart mythbackend:

su
/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend restart
exit

Now that the backend is set up correctly, boot the frontend system with the Knoppmyth CD. Select the frontend option, and enter your time zone information.

In the Configure Knoppmyth Database dialog that follows, select No to change the current configuration. You should only need to change DBHostName from localhost to the IP number of your backend server: all other settings should remain at their default settings.

In the next dialog, choose either DHCP Broadcast for an assigned IP number from your router, or enter your own IP settings.

MythTV should then connect to the backend server.

There are other systems out there that run off of a cd and do install a portion on a hard drive or floppy drive in order to allow you to bypass doing this after every restart which is totally useless. Anyways next time have something useful to say or dont bother saying it at all. Next your going to ask me if Im using a computer.

Those are not instruction on a frontend install. Those instructions pertain to using the CD as a frontend. Nothing more, nothing less. There is no official frontend installation instruction.

Why do you insist on calling it a "frontend install". Several people have responded to this thread telling you very clearly that knoppmyth does not have a frontend install option. The frontend option on the knoppmyth CD is clearly documented as strictly running from the CD only.

You may think that the questions I asked you were very basic. But you can't seem to understand some very simple concepts even after people have corrected you.
