I'm not even sure what the hell the error is, I get this in the text box but it doesn't tell me what is wrong.

Quote:
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/X11/sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/lib/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -l ":0" "mythtv"
/etc/gdm/Presession/Default: line 44: /usr/bin/X11/sessreg: Success

This is a fresh install on a 20GB Fireball(had the drive since 97 or so), an Athlon 2000+, 1GB of RAM, an nVidia 4200 and a Giga-Byte Motherboard(I can't get at the model number right now).

I wanted to get the system up and running before I ordered the tuner cards to make sure somthing like this wouldn't happen, really hope that not having a tuner card in isn't the problem.

Any help would be great.

(I just did the install again but with a 40GB WD I had, this is R5C7 BTW)

Hi PoCX,

This tells the folks on the forum absolutely nothing.

This is helpful, and I would think it should run, without tv of course as you don't have a card.

What was the version of the "fresh install"?
Was it an auto install or manual?
What steps did you go through during the setup?
How did you ever get to a message like you quoted?
Do you have an ethernet card and a connection?
What sort of errors were you obtaining?
Did you run a memory test?
Did you check the cd mdsum?
Did you run the cd in the testcd mode?

Give the guys reasonable information and they will try to give you a reasonable answer.
Mike

I think the only time I've seen this is w/ a full / and trying to log in.

Hi,
I am running R5C7 on a 13 gig + it is an ftp server + feeds my betabrite led display + pulling some radio files to mp3 + the list goes on.

Besides trying it on a 20 gig, he said:

I would be confident this should have worked fine as an auto or a manual install. I suspect a bad burn /download assuming he used the same cd for both installs..

The KnoppMyth package, if is a good download & burn just doesn't do those kinds of errors or at least I haven't seen any and I really use some trash hardware! :)

mjl's questions answered in order-

What was the version of the "fresh install"?
I posted it was R5C7, but I use auto install.

Was it an auto install or manual?
Auto.

What steps did you go through during the setup?
All of the auto install steps, the system restarts and as soon as I get the GUI up it gives me the error which was the topic of the post, "Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds.", the rest is "If you have not logged out yourself, these is some installation problem or that you have run out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem."

How did you ever get to a message like you quoted?
Either the system's GUI comes up(I assume it try to auto login as the mythtv user), or I login with the GDM GUI. I can login with the command prompt, to root, and all of the other users on the system.

Do you have an ethernet card and a connection?
I have an Ethernet card, but it is not connected since my router is far away from me, and my laptop which I'm working on is using a wireless connection.

What sort of errors were you obtaining?
That is the thing, what I quoted doesn't seem like an error to me, if anything the "Line 44:/usr/bin/X11/sessreg: Success" would be it, but I'm not sure how coming being a "Success" would count as an error.

Did you run a memory test?
I ran a memory test when the system was running XP a month ago, and the only thing that changed is I installed KnoppMyth, then switched out my HD and installed it again.

Did you check the cd mdsum?
Yes, and I got it using BT, so I assume it was checked before the torrent was made as well. Incase my mdsum client is screwed in some way.

Did you run the cd in the testcd mode?
No, I ran the Frontend version and it didn't give me the login error, but I will run the test mode after I post this.

Now for extra info that just might be helpful but I'm not sure how.-
>The failsafe options don't work.
>I can kill and restart the GDM and I still get the same error when loging in with it.
>I get no errors until I try and login with the GUI.

Anyway, anyone have anything else they want to know because this is a little odd even for my bad luck with installing Linux.

Well, time to check your disk space (free/used blocks) and inodes (free/used index entries). Switch to an alternate virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F1), login as root, and type:
Code:
df -m
df -i

Report the results back here.

Hi,
Good feedback, might have to do a manuall install on the 20 gig but the 40 should have been good to go with auto install... I saw the R5C7 for the 40 gig, but is dangerous to assume things, got to watch the hyphens ya know.

Doing the boot: tv testcd I think is one thing to rule out the cd. Could be a drive incompatability also.

tjc's request is good to help fill it the picture.

Well those both look fine so it's back to Mike's suggestion to make sure that the CD was a good/compatible burn.

Also, I ran the testcd command and it doesn't even do the md5 check while booted, it says CD check requested by TESTCD, then it says on the next line "no files checked".

It might be a bad CD, but the ISO checked out, but then again so did the write checker in the CD burning program.

If you're booting with something like:
Code:
knoppix testcd
or maybe
Code:
tv expert testcd
and it says that, then there is something wrong. It should go through checks of all the various bundles saying "OK" after each one.

Cracked open a new pack of CDs, that one was a few years old, but I had never had one bad Memorex before. First time for everything always seems to come at the worst time, anyway be back in a few minutes to see if it worked with a new burn.

I ran
Code:
Knoppmyth testcd
, didn't change anything, then I ran
Code:
expert testcd
then
Code:
tv testcd

The last two ran through a few questions but when it came to the MD5 it seemed to skip over it.

Well it did the MD5 checks this time, and all of the files checked out on the new CD, I'm reinstalling it and I hope this time I don't get crap, as long as this works I'm going to order me a few TV tuners...

Hi,
Use tjc's syntax..
at the boot: knoppix testcd
and / or
tv expert testcd

It should take a while and step through a bunch of files then make a notation after each OK if it reads it properly and it is good.
Very perplexing as it has to be something quite elementry. This is all happening after the install and is coming up on the first re-boot?

tjc, do know of anything for issues with nVidia 4200?
Mike
