Hi,
I've been struggling with the installation of KnoppMyth R5 D1 for some days now, and this looks without doubt the best site to post this question.
I wanted to set up KnoppMyth to dual boot with Windows XP. I have XP installed on my 60Gb primary master and followed the manual install procedures on the KnoppMythWiki site to install KnoppMyth onto my 80Gb primary slave.
However, I reached an impasse. Once the files had finished copying to hdb1, I rebooted, but was faced with a flashing cursor where Lilo was meant to appear. I'd been reading elsewhere on this forum that by running the following was supposed to fix the issue:
# mount -o rw,dev /dev/hdb1
# chroot /mnt/hdb1
# lilo -v
This gave an error, saying it didn't like something on line 2. When I looked, line 2 was referring to /dev/hda, so I commented this out and ran the 'lilo -v' command again.
This time, it ran, and gave me the following:
Reading boot sector from /dev/hda1
Warning: '/proc/partitions' does not exist, disk scan bypassed
Warning: partition type 0x07 on device 0x0301 is a dangerous place for
a boot sector.
Proceed? [N|y]
This is the point I'm at. Is this normal, and should I go ahead with it? I'm obviously err'ing on the side of caution here as I don't want to lose my Windows installation. Any pointers would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Rob.

Apologies, I believe I've posted this in the wrong place.
Sorry Cecil

lilo is going to have to install to your primary master, ie. the /dev/hda was correct.
What was lilo's exact message?
what was the line?: boot=/dev/hda
you should also have the line: root=/dev/hdb1
dig around on the forum and google for problems with dual booting linux and xp with
lilo.

Hi mac,
The line I took out of /etc/lilo.conf was:
part: /dev/hda1 typ: 7
When I run lilo -v with this in, it says:
Unrecognized token "part:" at or above line 2 in file '/etc/lilo.conf'
If I comment this out, lilo -v gets further but displays what I originally posted (the warnings). Do you think this should be ok to leave out and proceed with the lilo config?

Ok, I actually commented the top two lines from the /etc/lilo.conf file, which were (apparently shouldn't have been there in the first place):
vga = normal
part: /dev/hda1 typ: 7
and went ahead with the lilo -v, entering 'y' to proceed. Now, however, I get the following:
Fatal: Filesystem would be destroyed by LILO boot sector: /dev/hda1
AAARGGHH! What now?! [eyes shut & breathing slowly]

Try just "/dev/hda". You probably want in in the boot sector of the disk, not the first partiton...

Hi,
I changed the following line in /etc/lilo.conf:
boot = /dev/hda1
to
boot = /dev/hda
and it seems to have worked. I've booted straight into Windows to let you know (haven't tried Linux yet), so mac & EvilTwin, thanks very much for your input.
Cheers
Rob.
