Hi,

I've been connecting the computer to my TV with an S-Video cable. I wanted to "upgrade" my picture so I bought an HDMI/DVI conversion cable. The picture is in 4:3 now, and its zoomed in, meaning that you don't see about 10% of the sides, top or bottom. My TV manual says that DVI from a computer will only show 640x480.

If I use a computer monitor cable, nothing shows, the tv displays an error message of "No Signal" (with irregular flashes), then displays "No supported timing" (also with irregular flashes.)

I've done a search here in the forums and I've seen references to "XF86Config-4" but that file doesn't exist on my computer.

I really don't like s-video because its not HD like I'm recording and any text (vi, firefox, etc) is so blurry its really not readable.

Any help greatly appreciated. Here's my setup:

AMD Sempron 2800 pin754
1 gb RAM (pc2300, DDR400)
Air2PC ATSC capture card (the $39.99 ebay special)
PNY "Verto" nVIDIA GeFORCE 6200 card (AGP, 256mb DDR)
Western Digital 250gb SATA hard drive
Memorex internal DVD burner
Vizio 37" LCD television

I'm open to a new video card, especially if its HDMI compliant, but not a new TV TIA,

From your sig it appears that you have a 37" LCD HDTV. I'm guessing this is a 720p set that is 1366x768. If that is the case you will need to set up a proper modeline to output 1368x768 to your TV. The 1368 is NOT a typo. Your modeline resolution needs to be a factor of 8 for technical reasons. There is plenty of information available on creating modelines so I won't go into that here.

Please note if you are running R5E50 then you won't have an XF86Config-4 file as Knoppmyth now uses xorg. You will need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. This any many other hints are listed in the upgrade hints and tips thread here:

Vizio 37" LCD HDTV (1080p)

I've followed the links and modified my xorg.conf file. I'm not quite sure what I did, but my video card has HDTV component out (adapter that plugs into the 10 pins S-Video jack) and I'm getting a signal out of it.

The signal is slightly larger than my screen. My screen is 1366 x 768, the image might be 1400 x 800 however (so I'm seeing a "cropped" image.)

Thanks for your help, and if you have any thoughts on slightly shrinking my screen I'd love to hear it!

Sounds like you have run into the dreaded overscan. A search for that term should provide some insight on your issue.

If your TV supports HDMI I wouldn't recommend settling for a component connection. I pretty confident you could get the DVI->HDMI to work. It took me several hours to get it right but believe me the results were more than worth it!

I was reading about overscan last night. I'll check it out some more, right now its not a huge usability issue.

Component out really does not seem bad. Before playing with the modelines, the component out was producing 720p output in a 1/2 size area (meaning, black border on all four sides.) So, for a quick fix I'd hit the "zoom" button on the TV remote and end up with an absolutely perfect picture. I feel its perfect because it was PBS HD and seems perfectly clear (ie could see the individual hairs on a spider.) But I'd prefer the DVI connection for cleaner wiring (wifey calls the mess "our spider web"

However, getting DVI / HDMI to work may not be possible because my TV manual explicity says that such a connection between the TV and a PC will be restricted to 640x480. Now perhaps its just BS, but this is also a very recent TV and perhaps the TV is looking for HDCP on the other end of the cable.

I'd also consider using a monitor cable if you think the quality is comparable, but the TV is picky about that too. Thanks,

I have a pretty recent TV (Christmas 06) as well and was able to get HDMI to work.

HDCP would only be an issue with an HDCP protected source and at present I don't think anyone is actually forcing HDCP to fall back to lower resulutions as there are too many non-compliant TV's out there and would water off too many people if they enabled it. Your problems aren't HDCP related (at least not for a few more years...)
