So I have a couple of pcHDTV HD-3000 cards in my box and both of them record at a pretty low audio volume.

When I watch my content that was recorded with either of the HD-3000 cards I have to really crank the volume on my receiver to get the volume to a reasonable listening level. (crank to ~ -30dB)

Other content on the box -- movies, PVR150 recordings, music, mythstream streams all playback at a reasonable level when I have my receiver at around -50dB.

And then we have this scenario...
previous night me and the GF watch some HD show
next day the I decide - hey, how about a little music - and I turn everything on and BOOOOOM! tha's LOUD eh? With the GF running in with the angry "tuuuurn it dooowwn!" - like I did it on purpose...

Any ideas on how I can fix it?

I've seen a few posts about getting the volume up for ALSA playback ... but I don't think that I have a playback problem.

Thanks!

The really weird thing is... The HDTV cards just demodulate the incoming transmission and copy the bits directly to the hard disk. They don't interpret or process the data stream AT ALL. It is put on the disk exactly how it came from the broadcaster. So the problem is that the sound path in your system when playing HDTV shows is different from the sound path during other activities.

I use ALSA digital out for all of my activites and I play the sound through my Dolby digital receiver. My sound is pretty consistent from HD to DVD and autio MP3 out.

It is weird...

One thing that I said that is untrue: DVD playback is also low volume - about the same as HD recordings.

So only PVR150 and mp3/flac output are louder.

So maybe the problem is my other sources are too loud?

I also use ALSA out for everything to my receiver.

Looks like there's no easy fix... unless the ALSA mixer can be used to turn up the DVD and HD playback (or down the PVR150 / music output).

Likely. Note that if you had other HD cards, they'd all be the same. i.e. there wouldn't be any audio difference between the same HD stream recorded on a PCHD3000, Air2PC 5000, or KWorld 110. You'd have differences between networks, and especially between network/local sources (particularly used car ads!).

I haven't done anything about mine, but I don't listen to music much, and don't mind adjusting the volume. I should probably level everything, one of these days. After you figure out how....
