Well, I _was_ going to suggest a faster CPU and more RAM in addition to a larger disk. That's basically a new computer at that point, and it wouldn't fix your situation. Like the others have said, look into your drivers. I did this months ago so I don't remember how/where I got them from, but I _think_ I got them from the NVidia website.

Also, go into the setup screens, and go through each entry on each page. Look at the description that appears on the bottom for each entry. Anything you're not sure about, ask us. Yes its time consuming, but there really has to be something in there that's causing this. You have more than enough power there, some thing or things is dragging you down.

Initially I was running the Nvidia 9746 driver, and about a week ago I switched to the latest (9755) driver to try to duplicate another users setup.

I have tried installing the driver and answering 'yes' to let it update the existing xorg.conf, and I have also tried installing the driver and answering 'no' to stop it updating the existing xorg.conf. As far as I can tell it doesn't make any difference which method I use.

To all the other questions prompted by the driver during the install, I have gone with the default answers. (as recommended by other users who have posted instructions on how to install the Nvidia drivers on KM R5E50)

Other than trying the legacy (96xx) driver I don't see what else I can try.

Does anyone know if there is a application which I can run to remove all traces of the Nvidia driver before I install the new one? Up till now I have just been installing the driver on-top of the existing one and letting the driver do all the cleanup stuff.

thanks,

Kevin

I don't think xorg.conf would be a source of performance problems. I think you have something wrong in your frontend settings. Maybe de-interlacing, maybe GUI, who knows.

I wonder if it is a problem with openGL since everyone seems to indicate that adding 'UseEvents' got the CPU right down whereas it doesn't see to be doing zilch on my machine.

I just spoke to a colleague and he said he had similar problems with an old Linux system some time ago. He was not able to run games as it went so slow and he discovered that OpenGL wasn't running properly so the CPU was having to do everything in software.

I have been to the Nvidia answers database and found the following article ..

http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=141

In that article it discusses a number of possible driver issues and lists all the files and symbolic links which should be there. My concern is that this is an old article and I wonder if the information is still valid for the 97xx drivers. Also it would be a significant task to go through and check that all these files and links are in place.

Does anyone know if there is a application you can run to check that all the correct files for the nvidia driver and all the links are in place?

In the meantime I will try your suggestions, looking for xsession errors, etc. I will also try running the frontend with the 'vplayback switch.

Also ..
"I'll probably have to say I can't help you any further with this. Can't think of any reason a beefy CPU would be dying like this. If you've turned all the eye candy (OpenGL) stuff off"

I will see if can turn off OSD altogether, or turn off the transparency as tjc suggested.

thanks,

Kevin

I have not been able to figure out yet how to start up the frontend with the -vplayback switch, there doesn't seem to be the equivallent to 'mythtv-backend start'.

However I did look at the .xsession-errors file. There are a huge number of error messages in there but I am not sure which ones to post here, so I will post the whole lot for my last session (sorry if it makes the post rather long).

One interesting thing is that I did see a message to suggest that OpenGL was being used (look for video timing method) ..

Another datapoint, this is the report from glxinfo. I am not sure what to look at here but as far as I can tell nothing stands out to me as bad,

The 99% CPU screams that XvMC is not working. (to me) I have a Celeron D 336 (2.8GHz) playing 1080i nicely with XvMC enabled on a frontend-only box. I also notice that in your /etc/X11/XvMCConfig file you have this:
Quote:
/usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1

Try removing the /usr/lib/ so it just reads
Code:
libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1

Then run
Code:
# ldconfig
and reboot. Let me know if that helped.

Mike,
I know that XvMC is turned off. Although I have that line fixed in my config file but I have not selected standard-xvmc as the decoder. This is deliberate, as with XvMC although the CPU goes down with normal viewing of HD, with the OSD up the audio stutter is unbearable. For this reason I have been trying to get the non-XvMC setup with OpenGL vsync to work for me.

Other users have reported that adding Use Events true to their xorg.conf fixed all their problems, and that they had dumped XvMC (due to a variety of reasons). This is the setup which I have been trying to copy, but so far have failed miserably,

Kevin

Some vague memory is floating around in my head having to do with the nvidia-settings utility...

Have you got the openGL "sync to vblank" enabled or disabled? There's also an option in there about allowing page flipping.

Mine looks like this:
Code:
root@black2:~# cat /home/mythtv/.nvidia-settings-rc

# /home/mythtv/.nvidia-settings-rc

tjc,
these are my current settings, from nvidia-settings, run from the KM desktop ..

Under Xserver xvideo settings ..
===================
Sync to vbalnk - enabled
Video blitter adapter, sync to vblank - not enabled

Under OpenGL Settings tab ..
=================
Sync to vblank - not enabled
Allow flipping - not enabled
Image settings - quality

And under MythTv/Utilities/setup/setup/TV settings/playback ..

Use OpenGL VSYNC for timing - enabled

(I have read confusing advice about this one, I am not sure if it should be on or off, but I have tried both ways but it doesn't seem to matter).

And I do have 'USe Events "true"' in my xorg.conf. I have tried it in the screen, and device section,

Kevin

To run the frontend with command line options, exit your current frontend and you should be put back to the x.org wallpaper. Press ALT+X and a terminal screen will be displayed, this is where you can put in the mythfrontend (I think that is it) command. If that doesn't work type in myth and press tab it should display all available options.

Sorry for the vagness of the post, just not in front of my MythTV Box at the mo.

If it makes you feel better I'm having the same OSD problem

AMD 2800+ 64bit
1GB Memory
160MB harddrive
MSI 5200FX card

I don't think I've been as careful and thorough as you have but I haven't been able to fix this either.

My mythfrontend has the same high CPU, I also cannot play ripped DVDs with mythfontend either, otherwise I get audio stuttering problems. I switched to xine or mplayer, I can't remember which.

Those people who succesfully dumped XvMC, how did their hardware compare? Were they doing HD?

I am not sure of the hardware configuration of those who have dumped XvMC, although from what I can recall when I originally started researching this I am pretty sure they had similar if not lower powered h/w. I will double-check.

tjc,
posting the contents of your settings file will be very useful to me, this is one thing that I have not checked. I have been accessing nvidia-settings utility via the KM desktop. I just do a right mouse click, select 'tools' then nvidia-settings. Maybe this isn't setting up OpenGL for my MythTV environment though.

I will check my .nvidia-settings-rc file when I get home.

Here is a really interesting section from the Nvidia user manual on nvidia-settings ..

"4. Loading Settings Automatically

The NVIDIA X driver does not preserve values set with nvidia-settings
between runs of the X server (or even between logging in and logging
out of X, with xdm, gdm, or kdm). This is intentional, because
different users may have different preferences, thus these settings
are stored on a per user basis in a configuration file stored in
the user's home directory."

Link to the user manual ..

ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/nvidia-settings-user-guide.txt

I am suspicious now as to whether the changes I make uing the nvidia-settings GUI are actually getting used for my Myth session,

Kevin
