I just upgraded to R5F27, and man what a smooth process that was! I simply used the auto upgrade feature, followed the steps, and pretty much everything was taken care of. It took a little time to sort out where I could change over to schedulesdirect, but once I did that, everything was golden.

Of course I had a minor quibble with one thing, the remote, though this has little to do with the upgrade. I'm using an ATI Remote Wonder (version 1 it appears), and I was originally using the ati_remote kernel module. The problem with the kernel module was that it would often repeat far too quickly, and cause problems while going through menus. It was very frustrating, particularly for my wife, who otherwise adores MythTV for recording shows she always used to miss.

With the upgrade, I decided to try out lirc instead. Well, that worked pretty well, though now I have the opposite problem. Now there's a noticeable delay between the time you press the button to when you can press the button again, and it won't repeat at all. The delay makes it a bit of a hassle to move through the menus, particularly for the long list of shows we have recorded. Perhaps there's a way to change this delay between button presses using lircd.conf or .lircrc, but I haven't been able to sort anything out from the documentation on lirc.org or from various forums.

If I've missed something in the FAQ, wiki, or forum; I apologize, but I have searched through many of them and not been able to remove this one last issue I have standing between me and a perfect MythTV experience. If anyone can help me sort this out, I'd be very appreciative.

You might check your lircrc file and look for the delay and repeat settings.

From the lirc site.

Quote:
repeat
tells the program what shall happen if a key is repeated. A value of zero tells the program to ignore repeated keys. Any other positive value 'n' tells the program to pass the config string every 'n'-th time to the according application, when a key is repeated. The default for repeat is zero.

delay
tells the program to ignore the specified number of key repeats before using the "repeat" configuration directive above. This is used to prevent double triggers of events when using a fast repeat rate. A value of zero, which also is the default, will disable the delay function.

I would guess that this is the same problem that occurs with Hauppage remotes using lirc. There is a conflict with the current version of the saa7134 drivers. You can remove them easily (I don't have the command off hand) or you can upgrade them if you need them.

I can't help you with lirc and that remote. I have been using the dragon kernel module for mine w/ R5F27 and it's been great.

Here's more or less what I did to go from lirc to the dragon kernel mod:

Code:
# /etc/init.d/lirc stop
# update-rc.d -f lirc remove
# rmmod lirc_atiusb
# rmmod lirc_dev
# rmmod ati_remote
# modprobe ati_remote

The rmmod ati_remote may fail in which case

Code:
#updatedb
#locate ati_remote

Copy one of the results to the right dir

Code:
# cd /lib/modules/2.6.18-chw-13/misc/
# mv lirc_dev.ko lirc_dev.ko.no
# mv lirc_atiusb.ko lirc_atiusb.ko.no
# reboot

I can't take credit for this; it is cut/paste from several posts in here which I don't have referenced. I believe cesman and tjc are the contributers, but apologies in advance if I left your name out!

I've been working 2 days straight trying to get the ATI Remote Wonder (original one sold with the Dragon V1.0). So many references here and elsewhere. Going on many tangents.
As of a few minutes ago I have a fresh install of r5f27, and am ready to try getting the ATI going.
In your post above, Is that for someone who already modified their system for LIRC, or can I use it in my virgin install to get the ATI working?
Thanks in advance.

Dragon V1.0 box totally unmodified.
Remote has worked in earlier versions of Knoppmyth.

(going to try and figure your steps out while waiting for forum responses.)

Here is the original reference (finally found it). I found that my remote wonder didn't work out-of-the-box. I then ran the lirc install script and give it a try and realized that I didn't need lirc at all since this device uses it's own kernel module and I did some searching and did the above procedure.

Does your remote work out-of-the-box?

For what it's worth, my Remote Wonder (original, not II) worked fine on a fresh install (which was turned into a FE only box). Lirc worked 'out of the box'. I manually restored my old .lircrc and lircd.conf to get my custom mappings back, but no other changes were made.

I'm not sure how to help you with your remote if it wasn't picked up at the install, Nerdful1, mine was noticed right away and worked, it just doesn't work quite as well as I liked. You can try the above instructions for the kernel module that graysky listed.

I noticed the delay and repeat settings, but the explanations for them haven't exactly told me how I can manipulate them to get what I want. I've changed the settings, and haven't noticed a difference.

Just in case anyone's missed my complaint, here it is boiled down:

kernel module = ridiculously fast repeat if you're not careful, hard to control
lirc = must wait almost a second between button presses, or they're ignored

Obviously I can live with this, but I'd just as soon fix it if possible. Does anyone understand how to manipulate these settings and how they'll change?
