I've been trying, on and off for a few days now, to setup a machine to run KnoppMyth R4V4.1. Everything works except one thing, input via the antenna on the PVR-250. All I get is static/noise. The s-video input works fine under MythTV. The machine is:
- 1GHz Duron
- 512MB
- GeForce3 w/TV-out
- PVR-250 (rev3 board)
- SBLive
All other features in MythTV work without issue.
I know the card works and is receive a valid signal via the antenna. If I boot Windows on this machine and use the tools on the Hauppauge CD, I can watch TV via the antenna without problems.
I'm at a loss on the Linux side. I've read hundreds of forum messages, faqs, browsed for anything that might resemble my problem. I've tried countless different "solutions", even resorting to recompiling the drivers. All I get is static.
Yes, I've tried using test_ioctl, ptune.pl, and mplayer to debug this: selecting the input, setting the proper input format (NTSC), changing channels, etc. The s-video input works flawlessly, but the antenna input only produces static under Linux.
Any random words of wisdom someone is willing to share?

Have you got the right frequencies associated with that input?

After setting a channel with ptune, using the ntsc-cable/us-cable frequency table, I used ioctl to double verify the set frequency. I then compared this to the frequencies the Hauppauge Windows app WinTV2000 claims to be using. The frequencies match, yet only static is produced under Linux.
I also manually set all programmable frequencies between two valid channels (in this case channel 2 and 3), 160 different frequencies. In all cases, only static.

OK, it sounds like you are attaching the co-ax input on the card to cable not an antenna. If you're REALLY using an antenna you should be using the US Broadcast frequencies table rather than the US Cable frequencies.
If you just misspoke and are using cable there are a linked series of things that need to be set up right. This will mean running mythtv-setup.
Assuming that you've configured your capture card correctly (double check this, it should be "MPEG : /dev/video"), make sure you've set up your "video source" correctly. In the US this now involves zap2it data direct setup (and registering before hand). Also make sure you've chosen the right version of your local cable provider (digitial vs. regular, etc.).
Once you have that done, you need to associate the video source with the correct input connection. You'll need to associate the name you gave your video source with (and ONLY with) Tuner 0. If you associate it with more than one input connection MythTV will pick the first one it finds and all you'll see is static (been there, done that, scratched my head 'til it bled). If you have the source associated with the wrong connection MythTV will switch to that connection and all you'll see is static.
The bottom line is that you need MythTV looking for the right type of card output, tuning it to the right frequncies, and looking for them on the right input connector.
BTW - Even with all this you may find that your cable system has a few channels that aren't quite on the expected frequency. Comcast in MA seems to get channels 5 and 6 wrong and require a finetune adjustment of roughly +25.

I appreciate your long response, but this doesn’t resolve my issue. Yes, I mistyped cable for antenna. (However, I have tried an antenna as well, using the bcast freqtable, cross referencing the frequencies between what the Windows app usings and again it works under Windows but not Linux.)
The MythTV side of things is configured properly as far as I can see, I get all the appropriate data from zap2it, the program guide data looks correct, the inputs are all associated correctly, etc. I can view and capture data fine with the composite and s-video inputs. The tuner only produces static. And as I stated earlier, I ran thru all the frequencies between two adjacent, valid stations, with no luck.
MythTV aside, even doing a clean Linux install (not using KnoppMyth), grabbing various versions of the ivtv driver, extracting different firmware versions (including the latest shipped on the CD) for the card, compiling and testing via ivtvctl and mplayer yields the exact same results. Composite and s-video inputs capture data flawlessly. However, only static on the coax input.

Bizarro...
More hardware details please. MoBo specs, chipset, maker, ..., PVR model (What is the model number on the white plastic label on the tuner cover), ...
I still half suspect you did something excessively clever in your set up, so next we'll proably need all the info from mythtv-setup.

I'm having the same problem with my new machine.
I did the KnoppMyth auto install R4V4.1
Chaintech 7nif2 Mobo
PVR-250 (not mce)
Athlon XP 2000+ processor
512 MB Ram
I was so excited when I got MythTV up and running, only to find I can only see Static.
Hmmm... Time for more searching

Ok, I searched the gossamer-threads forum and found this thread about getting Static with the PVR-250:
Quote: Hi, Just had a quick look at your modules config: > > > > /etc/.aumixrc -S >/dev/null 2>&1 || > > > > : > > > > alias usb-controller1 usb-uhci > > > > alias char-major-195 nvidia > > > > #ivtv modules setup > > > > alias char-major-81 videodev > > > > alias char-major-81-0 ivtv > > > > options ivtv debug=1 > > > > options tune type=2 > > > > options msp3400 once=1 simple=1 > > > > add below ivtv msp3400 saa7115 tuner > > > > add above ivtv lirc_dev lirc_i2c > > > > > I think you might want to try changing the line to options tuner type=2 so that the correct tuner is set at module load time. Just a tiny typo, but it might do the trick Cheers, Emlyn
Knowing absolutely nothing about linux (this is my first crack at it), I was wondering if someone wiser could A) Tell me if this may also be my problem & B) If it may be, tell me how to fix it
Thanks,
Brian

if you are not in the us it might be your problem. basically tuner 2 is ntsc not sure what PAL uses, but I want to say I remember tuner 5.

Try
Quote: insmod tveeprom
this should give you your tuner number on dmesg or try to look at /var/log/messages. Mine eg is 29 (PAL) MCE NTSC is 39. Quote: tvee: Hauppauge: model=32034, rev=B148, serial#=6913039 tvee: tuner=LG TP18PSB11D (idx=48, type=29) tvee: tuner fmt=PAL(B/G) (eeprom=0x04, v4l2=0x00000007) tvee: audio_processor=MSP3415 (type=6)

Ok, I tried that and here is what I can read from the TV screen.
Code: tvee: Hauppauge: model=32032, rev=B382, serial#=726... tvee: tuner=<unknown> (idx=82, type=-1) tvee: tuner fmt=NTSC(M) (eeprom=0x96, v412=0x00001000) tvee: audio_processor=MSP3440 (type=11) I'm not exactly sure I copied down the last 2 lines perfectly, but the first are easier to read and I know those are right. As Per my last post, I looked at the modules.conf file, but did not find any line that looked like Code: options tune type=2
I seems like that is part of the code for ivtv, and I think that I have Bttv installed (But i'm not sure, you tell me)
I would love to get this working, please give me some feedback and tell me where to tinker. BTW, I am in the USA if that makes a difference at all.

that code won't be in the modules.conf file it will be in /etc/knoppmyth/modules/ivtv or ivtv0

Ok, so I've figured out how to use Putty so now I can read things
I figured i'd upload part of my modules.conf file, and hopefully someone can tell me if anything is out of whack.

I have the same issue with a brand new PVR250. Had a working PVR350 in another box (XP) and finally swapped them and Knoppmyth TV worked (After I re-complied ivtv). The PVR250 did not work in the XP (WinTV2000) even after updating the driver.
So I brought it back and got another one. Pulled the PVR350 and put in the PVR250 and I'm back to square one.
Working with a Dell Optiplex GX260, on board audio and video. Since I see I'm not alone, I'm compelled to continue to troubleshoot the PVR250 rather than give up and go back to the PVR350.
Quote: that code won't be in the modules.conf file it will be in /etc/knoppmyth/modules/ivtv or ivtv0
I think correct path is /etc/mythtv/modules?
I modified the "options tuner type=2" and made it "tuner=-1" and then tried "tuner=1" in ivtv, neither worked.
FWIW - The PVR350 ran for over 24hours with out one issue. With the PVR250 installed it will lock up the system and the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights flash. It will sometimes take a few reboots to get up and running once this happens.

Went back and re-read post from tanzania and tried one more time.
I modified the "options tuner type=2" and made it "options tuner type=39" (<--Fixed my typo - sorry late night post )
When I first tested, it did not seem to work (maybe I didn't wait long enough) but a tried again and it's now working. Even after a reboot!
Thanks tanzania!
