I have just installed R5F27 after using a previous release for over a year with no problems.
Now when i go to watch live tv I get a blue screen, The audio works, but no video. If I go into "watch recordings" the video in the preview works fine, but if I select it to play I get a blue screen again.

All other menus and everything work fine it is just a problem with full screen video.

Any Ideas?

After some messing around in the appearance tab my wife found that the TV will display if it is is not full screen, by changing the screen settings, GUI width and height to about 1190 wide by 1024 high. If we go upto 1280 X 1024 we get a blue screen.

Any ideas?

What was your previous release?

Unfortunately I don't remember what release I was using before and I have now removed it, so I can't check.

ok, I have tried using a different monitor and it works fine, Unfortunately this monitor is a burned out old Sony Trinitron.
The monitor I was using before is a Xerox 900p LCD Monitor and I'd like to keep using it. Any ideas what may be causing this problem?

tjc put a lot of hard work into these so please use them. Lots of good information.

If I had to guess, you have a problem with your xorg.conf file. Most likely in the modeline section.

I have looked at these instructions, but really don't know where to start. I can't find anything that applies to my situation.

Before I go any further I should make it clear that my Linux experience is limited to getting my previous version on knoppmyth going (with a lot of help from this forum).

Those links are the same with your link highlighting the word "instructions"... Not sure why it would be any different, and all 3 links work for me.

You should read the section "2) X Server and Desktop changes:"

If I had to guess, you were probably upgrading from R5D1 or earlier. This means that your XF86Config-4 file was probably not backed up. This is a bummer because if it was working before, you could have used the modelines from that file in the new xorg.conf.

Just do a google search for xorg.conf and modelines. That should get you on the right track.

I was wondering if I could get around this problem by changing the resolution that Knoppmyth starts in.

Of course I have no idea how to do this either.

The file in question is /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Open it up in nano (nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the nano controls are listed at the bottom) and look for a section similar to You can change the Modes and restart X (pkill xinit) to find the resolution that will work with your TV. Note the multiple Depth sections, you'll want to change at least 24 and 32, if not all of them. (Does R5F27 have nvidia-settings? May be easier to make adjustments with that...)

NOTE: I strongly recommend backing up your xorg.conf before making any changes - Eg. cp -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.tom118

By edidting the /etc/X11/xorg.conf as suggested and changing my screen settings to 1024X768 with separate modes for for GUI and tv playback (in Utilities/setup> Setup> Appearance) I am now able to view my Mythtv full screen on my nice LCD monitor.

Curious: What resolutions does your Xerox 900p LCD support, and what video chipset/card are you using to drive it?

Looking at the specs of this monitor you should be able to drive it at 1280x1024, that is if your video card can handle that. Refer: http://www.xerox-displays.info/product_display_xa7.html#

Out of interest whilst I was looking at this monitor I found they had a voluntary recall, http://www.xerox-displays.info/news20060530.html. This news may be a little old, just thought I would let you know if you were not already aware.
