I don't have any NICs that will boot over the network, otherwise I might try that. I do have dozens of hard drives laying around though, I just wanted to get something that was close to the size I would need.

You could always go diskless. Take a variant of the diskless front end approach and make it a diskless backend.

I did this, and once properly configured it works fabuloulsy. My diskless slave backend has a Motorola DCT-6200 attached via firewire. The DCT-6200 runs hot, so it needs lots of ventilation, and thus can't be in the wire closet with the MBE.

Diskless is just so waay coool...

Here is my 2 cents.

Go through the setup on the SBE and remove the fillmydatabase as this should just run on the MBE.

You can download a bootable CD to 'PXE or PIX boot' most NICs. I had a few diskless Frontends. (My kids win98 game boxes)

Also remember that you can use a host alias. This means you can type the code as provided in above example and still have external reference embeded in mythweb links so that you can stream videos while away from home.
from /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost aliasname1
192.168.1.20 mbe.myip.dyndns.tv mythtvmaster
192.168.1.21 sbe1.myip.dyndns.tv mythtvslave

So I'm trying to setup a new slave with 5.5.

I have two working boxes. I want to convert one into a slave. I just installed 5.5 onto it, what changes do I need to make?

Someone mentioned when they did a new install it automatically detected the MBE, which mine did not do when I just installed. Are the steps still the same as before?

I followed the instructions from my original post, and bigbro's follow up for setting the tuners, and it worked PERFECTLY! :)

One problem I had was the hosts file initially contained a line like

127.0.0.1 mythtv localhost

and on the slave
127.0.0.1 mythtvslave localhost

and because of this the
192.168.n.n mythtv
wasn't being picked up properly.

One issue.
My SBE has a very small hard drive. 20gb. I would rather nothing be saved to it. That all recordings get saved to the MBE no matter where they are recorded from. What would be the best approach to accomplish this?

Gibble, Just rebuilt two of my boxes in 5.5 the instructions worked great!
I also had the issue that my recordings on the sbe, were going to that box.

On the sbe make sure you do these steps from the LinHes instructions
Code:
mkdir /mnt/mythtv
cd /mnt
ln -s mythtv/tv tv          put /mnt/tv in storage directories on sbe
Ln -s mythtv/video video put mnt/video in appropriate place
Ln -s mythtv/music music put mnt/music in appropriate place

where "mythtv" is the name of your mbe.

That worked perfectly for me, now all my recordings from either box go to the MBE storage.

Next I will begin adding back in my other drives but it all should work from here.
