I just buildt a Myth system for a friend..

amd 800 duron
g4 mx 440
512 ram
200 gig drive
PVR250

dvd playback.. is ok...jerk jerk....ok...jerk jerk.. i ran top while using it and it was using ~68% cpu usage..high but not pegging. I tryed several things and gave up for the night. I then relized that i have never actually sat and watched a DVD on mine.. so i went home and tried my computer.

amd 3000+
g4 mx 440
1 gig ddr 400
200 gig 7200 rpm
Pvr 250

much better but still not really smooth like a real dvd player would be. Dont get me wrong to really see it on my system you have to pay closer attention then the Top system. The top system i had to compile Mplayer so it would play anything at all.. my bottom system uses the stock mplayer install for knoppmyth. any ideas?? is there a hadware accel we can use?? or is it turned on by default.. maybe swith to xine.. but after r4v4 it seems to break stuff when i force-overwrite install..

I saw stuttering DVD playback until I enabled DMA for the DVD drive.

Beyond that, it's tough from the description to know whether it's a lack of deinterlacing, a lack of 2-3 pulldown, or other playback problems.

I've got xine running with R4V4.1, btw. Didn't realize it was a problem! The tvtime deinterlacing and post-processing is very interesting.,,

On my fast system i enabled dma addressing and it didnt seem to help.. although my system wasnt really that bad.. i will try it on the slower system and ill find out. I cant seem to get xine going.. i first

Quote:
apt-get update
apt-get install xine-ui

off cource it says:

Quote:
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/libxv1_4.3.0.dfsg.1-6_i386.deb

so i read here:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1487&highlight=forceoverwrite

and tried:
Code:
dpkg --force-overwrite install/var/cache/apt/archives/libxv1_4.3.0.dfsg.1-6_i386.deb

it says:
Quote:
dpkg: need an action option

Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages [*];
Use dselect for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;
Type dpkg --licence for copyright licence and lack of warranty (GNU GPL) [*].

Options marked [*] produce a lot of output - pipe it through `less' or `more' !

i also tried various versions of the above command trying to get something to work.. did i mess up the syntax?
