I can't believe how cheap the rear-projection TV sets have become. When I bought my Pioneer RPTV I paid an embarrassing amount of money for my state-of-the-art CRT based set. It's a whopping 61 inches of HDTV joy.

Fry's now carries Mitsubishi DLP projection sets measuring a huge 73 inches across that sell for $2400-3000 --- before any Black Friday discounts. If I upgrade I would get:

-- Better convergence (heck PERFECT convergence)
-- HDMI / DVI inputs
-- Bigger screen (duh!)
-- New set (mine is about 7 years old now, knock on wood)

The Mitsu set also has a serial RS-232 input, a cablecard slot, and Firewire ports. Its feasible that I could use the TV as a cable box, programming it for channel changes and recording it via Firewire.

What's the KM poop on these sets? Has anyone out there got one and if so how do you like it? Does it overscan like a b*tch, like almost every HD set I've seen so far? Or does it line up perfectly on 1920x1080, pixel by pixel?

Now that would be cool! Please let us know if that works for you.

I own a Samsung with both Cable Card and 1394. I have not had good luck getting mythtv to use my TV as a tuner. However, I can confirm that test-mpeg2 works, though it is not reliable. If mythtv had a retry feature on the firewire then it would probably work.

I'd be curious to see how well it works on a brand you mentioned.
