Hi -
I want to swap out my DVD burner with a normal DVD drive.
Dvd burner installed now: Lite-On 812S
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-934&depa=0

Dvd Drive to be installed: Lite-On XJ -HD166s
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=27-131-112&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE

What sort of trouble could I be getting myself into doing this. I am new to linux and want to know the process required to swap drives. If someone knowledgeable could walk me though the process and help me decide if it's worthwhile I would really appreciate it. My end goal is to put the burner in my XP computer where I am more comfortable with the burning software. I figure that since I have a pvr-250, burning my recorded shows will be easy in XP because they are already mpegs. Thanks in advance.

-Brian

if they are both ide drives and you are going from a burner to a non burner all you should have to do is swap them out. This would not work if it were the other way around.

What would you have to do IF you were doing it the other way around?

not really sure I would have to search and dig to find out, because the autodetection needs to be run or it needs to be fixed manually.

I am going to install a DVD burner now as well. What is the command to run this autodetection by hand?

But you really shouldn't have to do anything as the append ide-scsi is already in lilo.conf. cdrecord --scanbus to see if the drive is seen after installing.

The DVD burner was recognized after booting. I have not yet used it for burning, but reading is fine.

As always Cesman was right...

After loads of problems I have decided to go ahead and re-install my r4v5 system, mainly due to the dpkg system being well confused.

Before I proceed there are a few files and recordings, as well as the knoppmyth backup that I would like to archive onto cd or dvd. I have used cesman's command above to see if my dvd recorder is being recognised okay by the system, and it is. I will modify the knoppmyth backup script to tar up the stuff I want to back up in addition to the stuff already therein. I just wondered if the size of all the files is larger than 650mb, the size of a cdr, could i use cdrecord to backup the files onto dvd ????

I have looked around for dvd tools, but these will not install due to my dpkg dependancy problems.

Or would the easier way to copy the tar files via samba onto my windows box and store them there until I have re-installed......

Regards

I went the other way around. I had a cd-r drive (BTC) and just put in a Lite-On DVD-R/+R (88.00 from walmart). It recognized it on reboot and haven't had any problems. DIdn't have to do anything either.
