I'm playing with Knoppmyth for the second time around. The first time was unsuccessful because my capture card wasn't supported in linux. This time i bought a PVR-250, and TV actually works ;)...sort of....

I was able to fix a few problems by reading this board, but i'm still having a few irritating problems.

1) mythfilldatabase doesn't work. I run mythtv-setup and go to step 3. I name the connection, and put in my zip code. THe problem is that after I put in my zip code it doesn't give me a list of providers in my area to choose from. The first time I played with mythtv i was able to complete this step with no problems. I'm on hte same computer, and can't get the thing to work now. I'm able to ping web pages, download CD info, get weather, etc. So the internet is working on the comp, just not the guide. When i run mythfilldatabase it returns the following error for every day it attempted to get tv listings for:

-----Start of XMLTV Output-----
Parameterless "use IO" depreciated at /usr/share/per15/XML/writer.pm line 16
Using config file /home/mythtv/.mythtv/comcast.xmltv

/usr/bin/tv_grab_na: Config file /home/mythtv/.mythtv/comcast.smltv does not exist, run me with --configure

-----End of XMLTV output-----
error in 1:1: unexpected end of file
Fetching data for Tue Dec 16 2002

I'm pretty sure it gives this error because I'm unable to select my local cable provider... Maybe somebody can help?

2) The remote that came with my PVR-250 doesn't work in MythTV. I've read lots of posts that say it works for people right out of the box...why doesn't it work for me?

3) I can't change channels when I'm watching live TV. It seems stuck on channel 3. When I change to any other channel, say 55, it shows "55", the time, and a bar on the top where I assume the program info would go, but the channel remains on 3.

Thanks in advance...

All your questions have been answered!

Check the "sticky" for the XMLTV update that you need to do.

To get the remote to work, you need to select "i686 configuration" instead of "default" when you're running the setup. It allows you to select the remote and XV. I made the same mistake... =)

Channels won't change until you get XMLTV working.

-Andy.

Thanks!!

I kind of assumed the channel change problem was due to not having the guide. I never would have gotten the remote part though. I'll check sticky now.

XvMC Mr.X. I should note, this was compiled against nVidia drivers. if you have another card that supports XvMC and want to use it, you'll need to recompile. BTW:Unless you have a PVR2/350 you can forget about XvMC. The only time it is used is for MPEG2 playback.

I'm having a newb-type problem. I'm trying to edit ZapListings.pm as suggested in the sticky thread, but when I open the file in Xedit it is read only and won't let me make changes. How do I get around the read only stuff?

The file is owned by root. Start you editor as root and you should be able to save. :)

Thanks, but how do I start the editor as root? I thought I was already logged in as root...

no by default mythtv logs in as user mythtv. at an xterm you need to type
Code:
su
it will then ask you for your root password that you set up during install. your prompt will change to end with # instead of > then you are root, however I doubt that you can run a graphical program at that point. (at least standard debian won't let you) so you might want to figure out how to use vi.

cool wasn't sure most debian based distro's won't allow you to run a graphical program from an xsession started by another user even if you are root.

Thank you everybody. The database is filling right now, so hopefully everything will fall into place. I appreciate the extremely quick help.

Hello again...

Well everything works now, but the TV freezes after five or ten minutes. I can't record anything either without Myth freezing. I saw several other threads with this problem, but it didn't look like there was any kind of a fix. Did I miss it?

I have a PVR-250, Nforce2, Ti4200.
