Hi.

I got a new USB drive ( 1Tb ) that i will use to store videos.
And i have a problem.
What file system to use?
I have tried most of them but i run in to problems with large files.
Fat32 Was on the disk and that does not work.
XFS Cant copt big files to it ( 1Gb files does not work. )
Ext3 Cant copt big files to it ( 1Gb files does not work. )
NTFS Did not work at all. I could not even create a directory on it.

Or could it be that im charing the directory were i mount the disk with Samba?
And then tries to copy to it from a windows machine?

So.
What filesystem to use.
If its any of the above how do i set it up so it can handle big files (+4gb)?

I have searched the forum and google for 2 days now and tested everything i can find. But no luck.

EXT3 can handle around 2 TB, depending on blocksize.

Probably. First, I think you need to enable lfs in samba. Ex. "mount -t smbfs -o lfs //server/share /localdir". Second, windows is full of 1, 2, 4 GB, etc. limitations. Ex. are you copying to a FAT32 filesystem or trying to run a problem like winzip?

Both ext3 and XFS handle files over 1 gig w/o issue. XFS would be my first recommendation. ext3 if you were planning on using LVM.

Would you suggest XFS or JFS? I have not seen many suggestions either way, other than one benchmark that showed JFS to be faster.

I use both XFS and JFS in my current system. This was a test to see if one or the other performed better in real life situations. I haven't noticed any difference between the two. They are both far superior than EXT.

Kirk.
