Hi,
With less than a year to go before the analog tv transmitters are shutdown (17 Feb 2009) people are starting to question how to make the change for the over the air reception. One way of course is to go out and purchase that 105 inch lcd hidef tv. Since I don't watch that much tv nor have the resources for a large expenditure, I am looking at the "low road"
Enter the local Wal-Mart and their set top analog converter box. Magnavox TB100MW9 receives digital and outputs analog as rf or composite ntsc. ~$50 unless you have one of the government coupons to get $40 off. so it only then costs ~10 plus tax. Now to me to catch the news for only a one time $10 expenditure has merit. Oh ya, I'm cheap also
The issue comes up that since the pictures really look quite nice going through my 350 card, how does one control it without having to use two remotes. Out comes the Red Eye!
I see on the forum where many use the irblaster to control their sat boxes, and other tuners so figured I would try that approch. I have not completed everything so I can grab a beer and head for the couch quite yet, but the wheels of progress are turning.
At this point I have captured the Magnavox remote codes and married them into lircd.conf so either my A415 remote or the converter remote will navigate with what buttons are availble.
I have built a serial ir transmitter and can make the red eye blink
I have built a serial ir receiver and it receives from both remotes
and at this point, if I lay the red eye in front of the Wal-Mart box, I can turn it on & off using irsend.
So far seems to be the correct direction but the test box (laptop) I was using only has HDHomeRun so have not been able to follow through for the change-channel script. What I don't know is if there any other obvious stuff I may be missing?
Also are there any others that are thinking of going down the low road as I am? I'll post more details if there is an interest. I still have a few other details to work out as being able to use the 350 as the ir receive (current) and just add the serial ir transmitter.

Hi,
Last step I am looking for, is how to activate the channel_change script? I have added it in the setup for external control to use it but it doesn't.
I can manually run the channel_change and it seems to work, (light flashes, turns on / off the box) but not from the remote. It just does it's normal actions.
So far have not found any "details" other than "added channel_change" script...etc, all happy.
Thanks
Mike

Hi,
I made a config file for the remote control. If I append it to the bottom of the lirc config, the matching controls will work for me. A step, maybe in the correct direction? The button names are what is on the control.

I think what you're looking for is to execute a script directly from a button on your remote. If this is correct, then check out:
/home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc
You'll see a lot of entries, that correspond to what each button does. I've got an irblaster to change channels on my Dish301, but I also have an AVR-3805 that I want to adjust the volume on by a button on the remote. The channel changing is done by my channel changing script specified under 'Inputs' on mythtv-setup. Here's how we do the volume. Open up /home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc and look for specific button inputs for your remote. Pick out the button you want to assign- in my case FINE_UP and make its entry look like this:
Code: begin prog=mythtv #Use FINE_UP as a volume key prog = irexec repeat = 3 config = irsend SEND_ONCE RC-917 VOL+ end
In your case, I think your 'config' entry there should point to your channel_change.
-----------
Quick question though- why can't you specify this in your mythtv-setup channel-change script? (when specified, it runs every time a channel is changed) That way you don't have to manually change channels, and programmed recording works.
To do this, quit the frontend, stop the backend, and run mythtv-setup. Look under 'Inputs'. It'll run your script and append it with the number of the channel you're supposed to go to.

Have you got this working?
I have two hauppage cards in my mythbox so I am thinking of getting two DTV converters (with the two vouchers I just got in the mail). If you have this working, I would like to do it as well.
What I am wondering is do I need a separate ir blaster for each box? Do they have to be separate from the one I use to control my directtv box (for 3 total)? I have seen somewhere somebody sells a box that has multiple ir blasters (I made my own from a serial port).

Hi pilesofspam,
Haven't had much of a chance to pursue this in the past few days but I appreciate your thoughts.
Main problem is most likely my understanding exactly how it works in real life and actually what I am trying to do may not even be an option.
My analog channels are fine, The A415 remote makes life good, only have to get off the couch to get another cold one once in a while. The problem comes in when I switch to my composite port where the digital to analog converter lives. I added the path for the channel change script but the remote doesn't change to sending the commands to the Wal-Mart box.
Running the script manually works fine so I may have to try using up a couple of buttons to send the Ch+ & Ch- commands directly as you suggested, but the buttons are such a premium. As long as cable stays analog, there are one or two channels I like to watch once in a while so don't want to kill the main remote functions. I'll worry about re-using the tuner when cable drops analog and by that time in life, Cecil will probably have version ~R9X001 released and have a magic trick included for us

Hi greywire,
Sorry I missed your post earlier. The converter box works fine with the composite input. Should work on the rf spiggot also. The Wal-Mart one I have is grandma simple to setup, response time is only a little quicker than a KM box but that is probably a "digital feature" plus it takes the lag time of the KM input / output.
I would assume that each box would require a red eye, but you may run into issues trying find a mobo that supports three com ports.... unless one could work out a way to used the txd or some other output to be a switcher between two red eyes.
Currently, I can make it all work except having the eye fire via the remote. I have had it twinkle a couple times after have pressing the ok button but not in a controlled fashion.

Mike (mjl),
In your mythtv-setup screen where you enter the path to your irblaster script... Is it in quotes? If not it needs to be.
Quote: "/path/to/channel_change.sh"

I'm not sure I understand what your remaining issue is.
You have channel_change working? so you can change the channels on the dtv converter box using the ir blaster (red eye?). All you need to do now is set that channel_change script for the input source. do this in the mythtv-setup, Input connections. Set 'External Channel change command' = channel_change.sh.
If this all works for you let me know so I can feel comfortable getting two of these boxes!

Hi,
Quote: Is it in quotes? I shall give that a go! I missed seeing the "" are needed somewhere along the way.
Thanks

how is it going?
I have been doing some research on which box to get, and it looks like the Zenith DTT900 is the current favorite.
How did you capture the remote codes for the magnavox box? If I get the zenith one I would need to do that, unless somebody else has done it already.

Hi,
Haven't had the chance to get back at the remote project although I did remember to add the quotes.
There are several set top boxes popping up in the market. Wal-Mart so far is the lowest priced by ~ $10. However, you do get an added feature on the others, buttons where the Wal-Mart box is only remote controlled. You also get a couple more remote buttons to use.
From what I see, the three are all about the same, different label, about the same pricing.

As for grabbing the codes, I used irrecord, rather self helping app. Trick is to use the ident that you want to call the end file as it sticks the name inside the file so if you use something dumb, (like I did) test, where you would really want to call it Zenith-dtt900.conf so it is specificly unique.

i have a Zenith DTT900 and have been trying to get my mceusb2 remote to control it with the ir transmitters.
i did get a full config quite easily using irrecord (just takes a bit of time)
after adding that to the lircd.conf i can use irsend to send commands to the transmitter, and it blinks lik eit's doing something, but it doesnt actualy do anything that i can tell, not sure whats going on.
has anyone done any ir transmitting stuff w/ the mceusb2 stuff?
once i get it working i'll gladly share what i've done.

I have been able to create a lircd.conf for my external dtv tuner similar to what you explained. When I use it in my lircd.conf I do not get an error but nothing happens. My hardware works because if I use a dish config file it works. Do you do anything special ie frequency that you did not mention. Even when I do not have my pvr-150 installed and only have my serial irblaster attached it still does not work. Any ideas?

I set up 2 converter boxes and use the same serial blaster as my Dish_301.
Greg Frost posted some good information in
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... remotename
I basically followed this information and all is working well. To do what is suggested in this post however all the boxes must be different as the same signal will go to all boxes (I actually have my boxes arranged so that they all see the same led).
