It's the only way to get sw/data in and out of the box. None of my NICs are working (crash the box), so the CD is my only link to the outside world.

I'm using it to watch tv and recordings.

I'd like to use for MythVideo, MythMusic and Images, but you need to mount NFS mannually, thus that boring to do it each time I'm booting the FrontEnd Cd.

Anyway, the Frontend is very usefull to watch Tv and recorded programs.
I'm using it with my corporate Laptop.

If I could have a wish list I'll say to have a response file, stored on a diskette or a usb device to set some options just like the IP of the backend, network settings to use, NFS mounts to do etc.
The last thing I would like to have is to have the wireless functionning on my laptop.

Thanks for your great work !!!!

Love to see a "dedicated frontend only" install option on the CD..

prompt for things like NFS / SMB directories, wouldn't install a backend, etc.

just my $0.02

what is the risk of booting an existing M$ PC with the CD for frontend only?

can it harm any of the data on the HD, bios? anything?

No problems found on the existing datas on the harddrive.

The frontend cd is not using at all the hard drive, don't worry.

About the bios or any other hardware, the only thind **could*** happens is that the refresh rate of Xwin is too high for you crt screen and burn it ...

But, the auto detect feature is working very well, and I've tried the frontend cd on various systems and screens (even on a very old 14'' CRT), and no problems found... Cesman did a very good job !!

I've used it to watch TV and recording programs, but I would love to be able to have the frontend be a full-fledge MythTV client, installable on the fly on any box in any room.

The main difficulty resides in the fact that it's very difficult to add/modify anything to the frontend, since everything is on read-only filesystems.

So, I would second the suggestion above to provide options to specify mount points (SMB, IMHO) to gain access to music, videos and images.
At a minimum include smbfs. I tried apt-get installing it, but it's a real nightmare on a read-only filesystem.
Providing option and doing it in the config script should be, in theory, pretty simple: we are already specifying the IP address of the backend, so we just need the name of the share. If people haven't changed everything, the rest could be hard-coded.

This CD is pretty amazing. Kudos in any case.

The issue with music and video(have not tried gallery) is that the mount point must be the same on all systems. Lets say the directory I have for videos on the backend is /myth/video, this must also be the case on the frontend or the videos won't be located.

Yes, I agree.
From my perspective, it would mean 4 additional dialogs in the setup:

- Backend IP: 127.0.0.1 (default) [already there]

- Backend mountpoint: myth (default) [new]
- Music directory: music (default) [new]
- Pictures directory: gallery (default) [new]
- Videos directory: video (default) [new]

Provided smbfs is included in the package, would that cover it?
Best,
Laurent

I've already included smbfs in R5. While it would require additional dialogs, it also would mean a correctly configured backend.

I've red the posts here, and perhaps a bit of a twist of the features I see here, I'd rather be able to configure an ISO or somehow be able to put the configurations into the ISO before it gets burned so I can have a CD that won't need configuration OR dialogs. Pop it in and watch tv from any computer in the house.

Is it do'able to recreate the disk image to boot teh front end w/o any dialogs with custom values. It would be sweet to have a bootable CD taht booted to the MythTV front end with no intertactions. I know this would take some work on my part...but how much.

is there a wa to 'explode' the iso, modify the startup script with MY values (i.e backend IP) and no user dialogs, then repackage and burn the iso?

I too would like to see a frontend only install. This weekend I used the "frontendonly" instructions on xsecret's wiki howto page. Everything is working ok, but my machine that is supposed to be only a frontend is also running mythbackend, apache, etc. As far as I know, the only process that is problematic for the frontend is the mythfilldatabase cronjob, which I've disabled.

You can have Apache, MySQL or whaterver running on a "frontend" only. As long as mysql.txt is set correctly, it will communicate with the MBE.
