I've currently got 1GB of RAM in the Knoppmyth box. The swap partition is 2GB in size (created by the auto upgrade process).
I'd like to add another 1GB of RAM. If I do that, should I make the swap partition bigger?

If I do need to make the swap partition bigger, what steps are necessary? Can I use a tool like Gparted and shrink the boot partition and then expand the swap partition? Do I need to edit any text config files after the resizing of the partitions?

Eric

Probably not. You really don't want your system swapping if at all possible and if it needs to 2Gb should be plenty.

+1 for what tjc said. In my experience, 1 gig of physical memory is plenty for R5.5 at least. Looking back at my rrd logs for the past year, my system never get into swap.

With my current 1GB of RAM, I see the 2GB swap partition getting 20 percent usage pretty regularly. I'm not sure what is different on my end.
Maybe it's the nvidia 6150 video chips on the motherboard using some of the RAM for their video memory?

@neutron - that's interesting. Dunno why your system is getting into the swap space.

The Blutube-wide theme (or whatever it's called) is a real memory hog. At 1366x768 resolution it would just fill up my 1 GB of RAM and start hitting swap. I don't think I've hit swap since I upgrade to 2 GB RAM though :D

Some of the other themes use much less memory intensive graphics and therefore use a lot less memory. I'm guessing Blutube would be a monster memory hog at 1920 x 1080!

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that memory usage is very defendant on what theme you are using.

Two notes, first, there is a known and well documented leak in the X drivers, second, as noted some of the themes are serious memory hogs.

For example I was using Project Grayhem on the test box both to create a visual distinction and push the hardware. This turns out to be a really bad idea on a memory starved box when combined with HDTV resolutions. Recovery involves the reset switch and some very fast sysadmin work.

Been there done that :)

Memory intensive theme + HD resolution + 512 MB memory = serious FAIL!

Does anyone have recommendations on non-memory-intensive themes that still look decent?

Blootubelite-wide is decent.

With the upgrade to R5.5, I started using Neon-wide at 1920x1080 resolution.

Before the upgrade I was running Grayhem-Wide at 1920x1080.

It would seem that both of those themes cause me to use swap space.

I'll give you three guesses what the "lite" stands for

It's a great theme and has a significantly smaller memory footprint that the original although it's not quite as "pretty".

I've been using "glass" and it seems pretty snazzy without breaking the RAM bank.

I read in the R5.5 hints that you were rebooting your machine every 4 days due to the memory leak. Are you still or has the problem been solved with new nvidia drivers or xorg software?

With 1GB of RAM:
My machine was up to 40% swap usage last night so I rebooted. After the reboot the swap usage stayed at 0% all night.

With 2GB of RAM:
This morning, I powered down and added another 1 GB of RAM to the machine. Swap is still at 0%.

More like every week or so depending on the status, but yes. Just killing the X server and letting it restart is usually all it takes.
