Hi All,

I am strictly a noob when it comes to Linux but am trying to build a dedicated media center. One of the things I would like it to do is to be able to play streaming RealMedia and windows media (mms, asf etc) over the web so that I can watch premiership footie.

How would I go about doing this? I guess Mplayer would do the job but would I need to recompile? Also, would I be able to add a menu of links to the various streams within MythTV? or would I be best installing mythbrowser and creating a local hmtl page with the links. If I clicked on these links would it launch Mplayer automatically?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Chris

myth does not steam anything except tv, and only that to another frontend. Now just so im clear, mythweb already lets you watch movies (and music if you change it, read the forum) off your mythbox with a single click, however, that is not streaming. It copies the whole file over to your computer and plays it. the only way to stream i know of is vlc, which you would need to compile and setup. i did a quick VLC howto a while back, you can search for it. it sounds like you havnt played much (or at all) with myth, so that should be your first task. Once you know its limits and feature, you can start playing. if you play before you know it, your only gonna get frustrated..

BTW konppmyth for leagle reasons doesnt support playing REal/window media formats right out of the box. Its not that hard to add it, you just need to download the real media / wm9 codecs and recompile mplayer. I also did a walkthough on that .. search for "recompile mplayer"

Thanks for your help.

I also did some searching and found an unofficial MythTv plugin called MythStream that looks like it might do the job.

Once I can get everything set up properly in the first place.

Cheers

download the latest version of mplayer and compile it. Install Mythstream and you should be set. I watch news and video clips via Mythstream as well as listen to streaming radio. Works a treat

so it will stream live tv as well as video clips? i went to the website, but like so many other linux apps, the webmaster doesnt really go into (deeply) what its features do. I sounded like it was used to listen to internet steams, not steam internet. did i misunderstand it?

i am thinking of writing a how-to for mythstream since i have had a bit of a play with it and worked out most of its features.

Yes it will play streaming files such as wmv and realmedia files streaming directly from the web. I use it to watch the BBC news from the net as well as listen to many internet based radio stations.

But as said before a recompile of mplayer seems to be the best so you don't have any problems with it not understanding some files.

Thanks.

Sorry again for the noobness but can anyone point me in the right direction for a how-to on recompiling Mplayer in Knoppmyth.

My limited Linux Experience has been with Fedora Core 1 and 2, but I am a bit stumped with how to do it in Knoppmyth without a desktop and browser.

Cheers
Chris

Have you tried searching the forums for recompile mplayer? and make sure you check the require all words field.

One would use the same process of recompiling MPlayer on KnoppMyth as one would on FC. If you quit MythTV, you'll see a desktop. If you open an xterm and type lynx<ENTER>, you'll see a browser.

Yours is now used up. Pay attention to the post by me. I did not do a COMPLete walkthrough, but the important stuff is there. You need to Download the codec stuff as per the (optional) stuff, to watch Real and WM9

Aparently my spoon feeding was used up some time ago..

Heck yes! You outgrew spoon feeding long ago. You're one of the big kids now, no more training pants or anything! ;-)
