hard to say if I were you I would open and xterm and run mythfrontend from there, and see what kind of errors pop up when it crashes.

Well, I checked the MythTV Log and it would startup ivtv with the message "switching from none to WatchingLiveTV" and then output the message "switching from WatchingLIveTV to none"!?
I don't remember much else because I just reinstalled Knoppmyth and didn't save the log. Now I don't want to try to recompile ivtv, because it seems like a worse state (mythfrontend crashing -versus- picture w/no sound). Maybe I'll give it another go and do a complete 'make install' of ivtv, rather than just copying the audio module...or at least get some better info from the logs.
Thanks

Hey everyone --
Well, I'm in the same boat as the original poster. I have RTFM'd, and I've performed the following steps:
1) I downloaded a .au sound file, and ran a "cat <soundfilename>.au > /dev/audio", and I got sound. So, shock of shocks, I DO have sound in Linux. (Sound in Linux has been my bane since 1996...but I digress.)
2) I read the knoppmyth forums and found this thread, which described my problem perfectly. After reading the comment to recomplile iviv, I followed the steps, rebooted, but still got no sound in TV. (I do, however, no hear a "pop" from the speakers during boot, and on every initial load of MythTV.)
3) I adjusted the sound volume up using test_ioctl volume=<value>. No luck, though it did have a nasty effect later. More on that below.
4) I adjusted the volume levels in alsamixer. No effect.
5) I adjusted the sound options in "General Settings" to have the sound go to /dev/audio and not /dev/dsp, to see if that would make a difference. No effect. I changed it back.
6) I did a "cat <soundfile>.au > /dev/dsp" and got a HORRIBLY distorted, terribly lound version of the soundfile I tested before.
So I'm stumped. Great DVD sound, normal system audio, but no volume for TV, despite doing troubleshooting.
Silly question: Could the volume be down in the application itself? Heck, I've been digging for the voume adjust in the app, and I can't find it! (Yes, this makes me feel stupid, and I have another tab open in mozilla looking for the actual volume action, but so far no joy.)
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

the volume in the application simply controls dsp and main by default, so it controls basically the same thing alsamixer does, hower if it is down it will reset the values on entering livetv. I think it's [ and ] to adjust in within mythtv, but don't quote me on that I haven't used it in quite some time. I use external volume control.

Thanks! I'll give that a try when I get home!
(I do have to say, though, that it took me looking at [ and ] about three times thinking "And what?" before I realized that it was "[" and "]". I'm just slow these days. )
Thanks again.

if you want to know for sure look for the keys.txt file. It has all of the default key mappings or you could just fire up a browser and go into mythweb and see what it's set to.

Hey there --
Well, no luck with the sound. I still hear an audible "pop" on boot and on entering MythTV, but no sound from the actual app.
Also, the sound going through /dev/dsp is VERY loud and VERY distored.\
Additional steps taken:
1) Ensured that no channels in alsamixer were muted.
2) test_ioctl -y mute=0
Completely stumped here, folks.
Thanks

I found the problem with my setup. The PVR-250 card was bad. After installing it in a windows enviroment and getting the same results, I returened the card to the store and now the replacment works great.
Thanks
