Hi,
Can I use a different remote with the PVR-250? It seems to work quite well, but I really dislike having the volume controls on the colored buttons.

well you can use a different remote, but it has to use a special signaling protocol, check the mytht documentation. But probably a much easier solution would be to just remap the buttons to somewhere you do like on the existing remote.

Get a learning remote. I have the ALL-4-ONE learning remote from walmart. Radio Shack has 2 really nice ones. From what I have heard they are made by ALL-4-ONE anyway. It can learn like 25 functions. That is what I use.

You can map the buttons anyway you like in your lircrc file.

Actually I love the Hauppauge remote. I used the ATI for awhile but it just doesn't compare to my RF keyboard and the ATI confused my wife and kids.

the issue is not with the remote, it is the key mapping and the overloaded key functions.
The default key mapping uses the left and right arrows for menu navigation and video ffw and rewind. If you change the remote setting (.lircrc) to send the default volume changing keys "[", "] then the menus dont work with the arrow keys.
The trick is to remap the the keys using mythweb.
***** backup before changing data *****
there are separate mappings within mythtv for Global (menus), TV playback, music, etc. So we can adjust the keys in playback and music, leaving menu navigation unaffected.
See this link http://www.chrismenard.com/myth/MythKeyMap.html for my changes
With the customizations documented on the above page, the left and right buttons (Vol-/Vol+) work in the menus and adjust volume in mythMusic and all tv modes and mplayer. there are some issues with xine (menus and volume but I cant remember them now.
while not perfect, I can share my .lircrc file

I have a script that will parse your .lircrc and your key setting and output a text description of your mappings. you'll need get two files then run:
Code: wget http://www.chrismenard.com/myth/DisplayKeyMap.sh wget http://www.chrismenard.com/myth/key.awk chmod +x DisplayKeyMap.sh ./DisplayKeyMap.sh
<edited out text - see link in reply>

I went back and reread my post. Seems pretty confusing.
I have documented the process I used to allow the volume keys on my remote to adjust the volume AND work the menus. Check out the page i created:
http://www.chrismenard.com/myth/MythKeyMap.html
It has links to my lircrc file as well as specific changes I made within mythweb to the keybindings.
Also, if you attempted to use the my script to display your mapping. wget the script again, I have cleaned it up some. It is also discussed on the page linked above.

actually i would never go back to chinsy made for computer remotes.. I went to a local target and bought a very good quality standard universal for $16. I is way nicer construction then any ati/haupauge remote. (side note: thank God for made in china! lol) recompile lirc. and bam.. best of both worlds.

I use the One For All URC-3021B00, cost me 3 dollars at walmart. I set up the tv button for my tv and the vcr button to the VCR code 89 i believe (a phillips codec that sends Rc-5 codes that the pvr-250 can receive)
It has something like 36 buttons, arrow buttons, vol up and down, channel up and down. subtitle mute, bunch of others. I didn't like the hauppage one because it didn't have enough buttons, i wanted to use the > and < plus page up and page down, plus a bunch of others. Works perfect. No complaints. Cheap and not flimsy.

My Pioneer receiver came with one of the most versatile universal remotes I've ever seen next to my PDA, too bad the range on the palm IR is like 2½ feet.
The problem with the Pioneer remote is there are just too many buttons. Sure techie types like you and I can master complex button layouts but try setting the wife and kids loose with it. I'll tell you what happens, you come home from work and half the presets are reprogramed, the surround modes have been altered with a delay of 60 and the TV's stuck on antenae in SAP mode.
The Hauppauge is a great general use remote perfect for navigating the elegant MythTV menu layout.
When it's time for dad to break out the big guns then I grab my Gyration RF KB, RF mouse and Pioneer universal IR and show everyone how the big dogs run a multimedia entertainment system.
