Trying to do a fresh install of R4V5, to avoid the horror stories I have read about trying to upgrade from R4V4. Ok, I have:
ECS K7S5A mobo
Athlon XP 2000+
384MB SDRAM
nVidia GeForce4 MX440 64MB
WinTV PVR350
Emu10k1 souncard
Maxtor 160GB EIDE hard drive
After following the installation instructions here, I get to step 7, install-nvidia.sh, and instead of restarting the graphical environment, it flashes back and forth between a blank screen and the console several times, then takes me to a blue screen that says "I cannot start the X server. it is likely that it is not configured correctly. Would you like to view the X output?" Important to note is that, from this point, I have about 10 seconds left before the machine stops responding. If I say "yes" to view the x output, it says "no screens found" or somesuch. When I exit that, OR if I say "no" to NOT see the X output, it takes me to a similar screen that says "Would you like to run the X configuration program?" Whether I say yes or no to this (which I many times don't even have time to do before it hangs), it then tells me that it is going to disable gdm. It then kicks me back to the console, where it will inevitably hang before i can log in. No response to keyboard input, no ssh, no nothing. I restart, and it gets to gdm, and same thing.
My main question is: what's wrong? But also: without a console or ssh, how can i even change anything to fix this?
Thanks,
Howski

If you have a second computer, you should be able to ssh into your KnoppMyth box and make required changes.
What kind of monitor are you connected to? And everything displays OK until you try to install-nvidia.sh?
I saw that HOWTO and I would actually move that step 7 earlier: in other words, install KnoppMyth from CD, do the reboot, come to your first graphical window that asks for your root password, and THEN get out of X with control-alt-F1 and install-nvidia.sh. After it installs it will then restart X, and then (hopefully) you can continue the install scripts and the MythTV setup.

From my experience, install-nvidia.sh (step 6) has to go after step 3 (first setup after starting X). I'm not sure if step 7 is needed anymore because it looks like it is done automatically during step 3 (I'm not sure though as I haven't tried LIRC yet).
I suspect one of two problems (I have had X problems caused by both of these):
1. install-nvidia.sh was run before step 3 was completed.
2. XF86Config-4 was set up incorrectly.
For point 1 (from my experience), install-nvidia.sh must be run after step 3/4 (although it can be done before the reboot). I would also make sure X is running after install-nvidia.sh before going to step 7.
For point 2, it depends on the monitor/TV you have. There are a couple of samples in /etc/X11 that are good. The default one did not work for me on either TV or monitor after install-nvidia.sh, but the tv sample one worked after changing it for PAL (from your description, I suspect a bad XF86Config-4 is your problem)
My problem was made more complicated because at the time, I did not have a monitor connected, only a TV (I was too lazy to drive across town). If I tried to run install-nvidia.sh before step 3, X would not start up with the same error you described. Since X wasn't displaying correctly on my TV I couldn't execute step 3.
To fix it I did the following:
- At step 2 (where I had a fuzzy screen on my TV), I CTL-ALT-F1, logged in as root and ran "KnoppMyth-run -~" (this is really step 3, but outside of X).
- When prompted for the reboot, I first did an ALT-F2, updated the XF86Config-4 and ran install-nvidia.sh.
- I then went back to ALT-F1 and answered Y to the reboot.
Another hint if you completely lose your monitor/TV and don't have another computer to ssh from, you can boot the install disk, ALT-F2 to the prompt, mount /dev/hda1 and then edit the XF86Config-4 file in /mnt/hda1/etc/X11.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I will give it a host and let you know. Right now, it's working fine, abeit without having installed the nVidia drivers.
In the meantime, I have another question (posted elsewhere in the appropriate forum, of course).
Thanks again.

Check out the notes after step 7 of the setup howto:
http://knoppmythwiki.homelinux.org/inde ... ythInstall
How you change depends what you have for a monitor or TV, but there are some good examples and a detailed readme to help.

Computer Specs:
Motherboard: Asus P4P800-VM
Processor: Pentium 4 2.53
Ram: 512 MB
HD: Western Digital 80GB (7200rpm, 8MB Cache)
Graphics: evga.com "e-GeForce FX 5700 Ultra 128MB AGP"
Tuner: Hauppauge WinTV 401
I have been sitting in the backround just reading the forums. This is the only post that is close to the problems that I am having.
I can run Auto-Install just fine. Then when I get to install "install-nvidia.sh" I get an error message saying "No precompiled interface was found to match your kernal" I hit OK through it and seems to install OK.
Then the screen flashes a couple times so I hit CTRL+ALT+F1and thhe keyboard lights start to flash.
(I recall reading that the Onboard NIC causes this)
So I unplug the network cable and restart the computer.
And it boots fine then gives me the error "I cannot start the X server...."
So I CTRL+ALT+F1 to console and logon as root and attempt to run "install-i686-x" and get the error:
"...cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors encountered while processing:
mythtv-i686-xvmc_0.16-1_i386.deb"
I am sooooooo lost. At this I have ran auto install about 4 times now. Do I have to have the nvidia drivers installed?
Also, when I try to edit /etc/x11/xf86config-4 it always comes up and says "New File" like it's not there.
EDIT: Now it won't even turn on, it just sits there and the keyboard blinks.
BTW: I am sorry if this is an old post that I bumped, but I always thought that it was better to add to a post then start a new one.

The script install-i686-x points to a file that was mistakenly not included on R4V5. Change it to install-i686-lx (for the one that includes lirc and nvidia) and it should install it. The "extra" lirc code shouldn't hurt anything.

I ran "install-i686-lx" before I ran "install-nvidia.sh" and got the same thing.
So I ran "install-nvidia.sh" and now the computer is locked up instantly after running that.
(This is all on a fresh install)
I was able to run Myth TV and play around without running those commands, I selected "Watch TV" but got nothing but a green screen with some "snow" at the top.
Is there a way i can "uninstall" or "un-run"(sorry lack of better words" the "install-nvidia.sh" so I don't have to redo the installation?
EDIT:
I restarted the computer then ran "install-i686-lx" and it ran and no errors that I can see.
