I just auto-updated from R4V5 to R5A9 last night and ran into an issue, where upon trying to watch live tv, I got a message that all tuner cards were in use.

This wasn't the case. There were no scheduled recordings (prototype/proof of concept box). I checked the system status, and the tuner cards showed as not in use. I tried remotely on my Powerbook and got the same message.

I then tried running myth-setup and clearing my tuner card info. Upon restarting the backend, I noticed a message that /root/.qt couldn't be created. Permissions were 660. On a hunch, I decided to be heavy handed and I set that directory and everything in it to 777. Lo and behold, everything worked, and I could view tv from all of my tuner cards.

Hopefully this might be of use to someone else out there.

My config:
old crusty hand-me-down board w/ AMD Duron 1.2GHz
    384MB RAM
    200GB Maxtor
    2x PVR-250 (great)
1x WinTV Go PCI (awful)

Oddity indeed. Making a file or directory under /root is a very bad idea. After restarting the backend, did you try to watch TV?

I had restarted the backend and the machine several times, and I had seen the "All Tuner Cards In Use" message upon watching live tv every time until I changed permissions.

Testing methodology:
1) fire up myth-frontend
2) try and watch live tv
3) see evil message
4) quit frontend
5) tweak something
6) restart backend
7) repeat, with a couple of mythbox powercycles in there

I had seen the "can't access/write/whatever file /root/.qt" a couple of times before I realized it could be an issue.

After I did a chmod -R 777 /root and restarted the backend, the /root/.qt message went away.

I then fired up the front end and got to live TV without a problem. I fired up live TV simultaneously on my Powerbook from the second PVR 250 also without the message.

So it's sounding like mythtv is processing a file it shouldn't. Not sure what everyone else's permissions on /root are, but permissions on that directory might be something that KnoppMyth could look out for.

Sorry, while KnoppMyth is meant to be a PVR and it is hopfully behind a firewall, it WILL NOT include /root with permissions of 777 (PERIOD).

Of course not!

Never meant that KnoppMyth should start churning out legions of completely accessible linux boxes!

I'm just not sure of what the correct, minimally accessible permissions on /root/.qt are to get mythtv to run. So on my firewall protected box, I opened it up to see what worked. I'm sure others could be a little less heavy-handed if they run into the same problem - I was just highlighting a permissions issue. :)

Like I stated this is an oddity. I've seen it once or twice before. I've solved it by either restarting the backend or dropping the cards, reconfiguring and restarting backend.
