I have had a LOT of success with KnoppMyth. Thanks to the team that worked on it. And to Myth. Great software.
I have set up a back end that has Webmin running on it. I still need to get more stuff done on the back end like getting the dvd working, the pretty folder and installing some plug ins but those are all future things to do. But that is not what this post is about.
I am working on getting front ends working.
I have it working on one computer from the CD. The CD failed on a Sony Viao that is in the house. Looks like a graphics card issue.
The KnoppMythCD works on my EPIA box but the video is stuttery. So I would like to boot the Epia over the network. To do that I must get DHCP working.
Help.
Yes I am a linux noob. Or newer to it from the system side. I use it as a desktop but not at the CLI level.

Which release are you using? Currently there are no optimizations for the Epia in KnoppMyth that is most likely why you get stutter.

Before I start this post I want to make sure that everyone knows I try to research as much as possible before asking a question. And I know this is a very basic linux question. That is why I was not going to post. I thought I should be able to figure it out. I was wrong. help.

I am using the most recent release or so I thought. I just see now that there is a new version as of the 15th. So I could upgrade to that.
Yes I know KnoppMyth is not optimized for the Epia. I should have said I was surprised it worked at all. I know the stuttery nature is because it it not optimized for the Epia board. I didn't expect the front end to load at all from KnoppMythCD so I was pleasantly surprised and happy when it did. Since it is stuttery I am trying to get it to boot over the network so I can use MiniMyth. MiniMyth is optimized for the Epia.

I would recommend changing the tutorial to what aovermy is doing. She has gotten the MVP to work.
Also what help does your tutorial have for installing DHCP?

nano /etc/dhcpd.conf
I used vi but same same. Unfortunately there was no information there. Meaning no file. Hence the reason I posted this question.
What command or commands do I issue to install DHCP? Then how do I test that it is installed? Lastly will Webmin automatically install DHCP stuff once I install it?

If you have one of the alphas, put the CD in the drive and:

This will start prepare the system for use as a terminal server. It will configure DHCP for you.

Well, the wiki is free to edit by anyone. I've said before somewhere here on the forum that I wrote that up (what seems like) ages ago. It worked for me at the time I wrote it up.

And as I said, the DHCP section was Part 10. If nothing was in dhcp.conf, you could copy and paste mine.

But certainly if the alpha sets up DHCP for you, do that. Although you'll probably still need to configure it properly.

I am interested in getting an MVP. That is why I was reading up on it. Did you get the MVP to work with your MythTV system? Since I have not gotten an MVP yet or gotten one to work I did not modify the Wiki Page you created except to put the link to the discussion on it. I want to get an MVP because I can not afford a cheaper front end then $79.00 after rebate. I just wanted to make sure I could get it to work with Myth. I also wanted to find out if I could get more than one to work. I did not read anyone doing that though so I don't know if it is possible. I would like to have all the TV's in the house to have a front end. But I can not afford computers for all of them. Also the power consumption is a bit high for a computer then an MVP.

Thanks for the Alpha update info.
I have the R5A10 disk and I was going to upgrade my system after reading if anyone had issues with R5A10.
Before I try the prep command. I have a couple of questions,
Will I need to backup and upgrade first(I am on R4V5)? Will my existing data be lost on the drive?

Yes, you must backup before doing an auto update. /dev/hda1 will be wiped clean.

So I tried R5A10 and it didn't recognize my ethernet card or my PVR-250 so I downgraded back to R4V5 which I had been using.
So I will need to re setup webmin and some other stuff. For an upgrade downgrade it was very smooth. I did back up my files and did not lose anything that I can see.

After a install, booting from the hard drive insert the CD into the drive and prep-ts. What ethernet chipset do you have? As for teh 250, have you read my posts about the alphas?

Not sure on the chipset. What is the easiest way to find that out?
I have not gotten a chance to check out the threads on the Alpha.
I need to check those out before I try an upgrade again.

If the chipset is built on the motherboard, check your motherboard manual. If you have a NIC, pull it out. Google is your friend.
You should have read them before upgrading. Thanks for letting me know my time spend writing them was worth it...

I thought there might be a Linux command to find out what the chipset was.
Yeah I remember the RIF program but I was never really that good at it. I usually jump in hot molten lava then ask "Why am I on fire?"
I also wanted to see how the back up system worked. And it worked well. I trashed my system by upgrading then downgraded and didn't lose anything. Oh and I don't recommend other people try this at home. I still have a bunch of post config stuff to reconfig since I did this. Still liked trying it out to see how it worked. And I did take a BIG chance doing this with a production box.
Just as a note I have been looking for your document on the KnoppMyth site and on this forum. I am sure it is in an easy to find spot but I didn't find it. Is it linked in big letters somewhere and I just missed it?

Try dmesg and read the hardware identification messages.

Of course it's much easier to just check the specs. for your motherboard online. Try the makers website or a shopping site like http://www.newegg.com/, or http://www.pricegrabber.com/. PriceGrabber even has links to the makers website at the bottom of their "full specs" pages.
