Hello,

I am a KnoppMyth newbie, so please be gentle.

I have successfully installed knoppmyth on the following hardware:

Asus A7N8X-Deluxe
AMD 2500+
Hauppaugge PVR-250

I did have one problem where the ivtv drivers were not loaded automatically for some reason, so I had to manually execute

modprobe ivtv

before anything showed up in the Mythtv Input Sources screen. Once done, I got a lengthy list of input sources (s-video, composite, etc), and I associated the tuner input with the video source I defined as "Cable TV".

Here is my problem: When I try to watch live TV on my computer monitor (I dont have a TV hooked up to the TV out on my video card yet) in the MythTv frontend (which happens to be installed on the same box) all I get is a grey herringbone pattern, and no audio.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

OK, I made a little progress. It turns out that after I created the Input Sources, I needed to go back to the capture card and change "television" to "Tuner 0", or something like that (I cant see it from here).

Now, I can watch TV, but only 1 or 2 channels are visible. The rest are still that grey pattern, with intermittant audio. All the channels appear to have the correct banner at the bottom, showing the call letters and channel number.

Oh. The Hauppauge remote control seems to work too :)

Any help appreciated.

you probably have the wrong tuner type. you'll have to search for pvr static there are far too many different types for me to attempt to cover here.

dmesg | grep tuner

returns tuner type=50.

The /etc/myth/modules/ivtv file has the tuner type set to 2. Is this what you mean?

I changed the ivtv config file to set the type to 50. Then i ran

update_modules
modprobe ivtv

This didnt help any.

"Search this forum" would certainly be the one most likely to get you some good results. Don't forget to use the "search for all terms" option.

Edit: in fact searching for "pvr static tuner type" turned up only three threads, one of which led to this link:

Thanks. It's hard to find stuff here if you dont have the right search terms.

OK, I tried tuner type 39 but that didnt work. I see that someone suggested types 39, 44, 60, and many others.

How can I tell what tuner type I need to set? dmesg is reporting type 50, but when I tried setting that number in the ivtv config file, that didnt work either. there must me a way to do this other than guessing ?

not that I'm aware of, hauppage just changes the hardware too quickly.

Problem solved.

I set the tuner type to 50 as reported from dmesg.

Then, I remembered that when I had the PVR-250 in my Win2k machine, it only worked if I picked Cable-HRC. It never worked right with plain cable. So, I ran mythtv-setup and changed US-Cable to US-Cable-HRC, or something like that. This was in 2 places: General setup and also Input Sources, If I recall.

Anyone know what Cable-HRC is, and why it works for me?

Now, I just need to clean up the video quality. On my Dell 17in flat panel at 1280x1024, it looks a bit grainy. Any suggestions appreciated, altho I'm headed to the search button.

If your machine has the horsepower, I'd recommend "denoise3d" in the Filter setting in one of those darn Setup menus. You have to type it into the box; it's not a pulldown option or anything. That and (of course) change the Recording Profiles from their default 480x480 to something DVD-compatible like 720x480.

I've got an AMD 2500+, so I think I have the HP. I'll try setting the filter. Also, the grainy picture is on Live TV as well as recordings. I recall there are several profiles, including one for Live TV. I'll poke around.

Thanks.
