Hi :)
Ok new problems. First I was totally lost on what to do next. I searched on the site and found that I needed to run:
#mythtv-setup
#mythfilldatabase

I could not get the provider info after entering my zip code in myth-setup and mythfilldatabase would not work. So I followed your instructions for updating XMLTV:
#apt-get update
#apt-get xmltv

I reran myth-setup and mythfilldatabase and it worked.

Now when I select "watch live tv" all I get is a black screen :(

The mythtv-setup settings used were the following:
Capture cards:
Card type: MPEG-2 Encoder card (PVR-250, PVR-350)
Video device: /dev/video
VBI device: /dev/vbi
Audio device: /dev/dsp
Audio sampling rate limit: (None)
Default input: Tuner 0

Video sources:
Video source name: Cable

Input connections:
[MPEG : /dev/video] (Tuner 0) -> Cable

Did I set up anything above incorrectly? Is Tuner 0 the correct option when the cable is connected directly to the card. I also tried Composite 0 but I got the blank screen as well.

well if you couldn't get anything after you put in the zip that is the problem. what happened when you put in the zip? after you put in the last digit it takes a little while, then when your done with the setup you have to run mythfilldatabase which takes quite a while.

After I updated xmltv, the provider information was available and mythfilldatabase worked fine(took forever).

I made some headway on the blank screen issue. I noticed I was getting the following sound device errors:
Could not open audio device: /dev/dsp
open: No such device

So I ran myth-setup and in the Capture cards section I set Audio device from /dev/dsp to NONE. I then set a program to record in the mythfrontend and then selected the watch recording options, and I was able to see the video that was recording in the little window at the bottom right hand side of the screen.

Then I hit enter to watch the recording in full screen mode and all I get is the blank screen  Please let there be an easy fix for this.

Also, when booting the machine mythbackend gives the error: error creating /.qt. I see the message in the logs im still seeing the following message:
QSettings: error creating /.qt
QSettings::sync: filename is null/empty

almost sounds like your sound didn't get setup properly. run alsamixer and make sure it finds a soundcard.

As root:
/etc/init.d/alsa-autoconfig
update-modules

I get the following message when running alsamixer:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory.

Cool, the alsa-autoconfig command looks like it ran fine.

Its ok if I dont get the sound working right away. I really want to solve the issue of the blank screen when playing in full screen mode.

well the /dev/dsp error is a sound error, and I'm not completely sure how mythvideo works, it may very well not play if it can't open the sound device.

In your case, the black screen is a result of not having sound working. If after getting sound working and you still have a black screen, something else is wrong. Check the log and start the frontend from an xterm.

Ah I think you are correct. I ran mythfrontend from the xterm to see what messages it generates when its plays the video in the small window vs the messages it plays when in full screen.

Here are the messages from just starting mythfrontend:
mythtv: could not open config file
mythtv: No such file or directory
Failed to init /root/.mythtv/lircrc for mythtv

Here are the messages from inside the 'watch recordings window':
connecting to backend server: 127.0.0.1:6543
Input #0, mpeg, from '/myth/tv/2025_20040110150000_20040110160000.nuv':

Stream #0,1: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, 384 kb/s
prebuffering pause
prebuffering pause
...
...

Here are the messages when attempting to watch a recording in full screen mode:
Unable to open mixer: '/dev/mixer'
Input #0, mpeg, from '/myth/tv/2025_20040110150000_20040110160000.nuv':
Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg2video, 480x480, 29.97fps, 6000kb/s
Stream #0,1: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, 384 kb/s
Opening OSS audio device '/dev/dsp'.
Error opening audio device (/dev/dsp):
/dev/dsp: No such device
Error opening audio device (/dev/dsp):
/dev/dsp: No such device
..
..
player: Can't open audio device: /dev/dsp
Over/underscanning. V: 0.000000, H: 0.000000, XOff: 0, YOff: 0
Using XV port 69
Changing from None to WatchingPreRecorded

As you can see, when I go into full screen mode I get a ton of audio device errors. Hopefully fixing it will fix my blank screen :?
Ok so I ran the alsa-autoconfig and update-modules command. What next :D

I've already stated what is next... You 'd should run MythTV(or any other app) as root.

Ok here is what I have tried so far to get the sound working from information found from other posts:
1. test_ioctl -a |less #showed that I had mute=1.
2. test_ioctl -y mute=0 #set mute =0.
3. test_ioctl -y volume=60000 #set volume to a high level.
4. vi /home/mythtv/.fvwm/.fvwm2rc # make above settings stick after reboot
commented out: exec KnoppMyth-run
added in: exec mythfrontend

Then I noticed that the ad1848 module for my crystal sound card was not loaded so I did the following:
modprobe ad1848

Nothing I did above changed the error messages from mythfrontend when playing a video at fullscreen. Here are the errors again:
Unable to open mixer: '/dev/mixer'
Error opening audio device (/dev/dsp):
/dev/dsp: No such device
player: Can't open audio device: /dev/dsp

The alsamixer command is still giving me the following error:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

Also, how do you make it so that the ad1848 module loads at startup and do I need to load this driver?

look in /etc/modutils dir and see if there is a file called alsa or something there abouts. If there is then edit it so that it looks like this

Code:
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore

options snd major=116 cards_limit=4

alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/dsp* snd-pcm-oss

alias snd-card-0 snd-cs46xx

alias snd-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-slot-0

obviously my sound card uses the snd-cs46xx driver you will need to change that to the driver your card uses. Make sure you have the alsa driver for your card not the oss one. it should start with snd-????????

at any rate the important line is probably the alias /dev/dsp* line.

once you have either created or modified this file then run

update-modules
then
/etc/init.d/alsa restart

Please check the ALSA Project website to see if your sound card is fully supported.
