Hi all:
I'm a Windows techie, new to Linux. I've installed Debian 5 or 6 times, and played around with it for a week or two. Total newbie to Knoppmyth.
I've been lurking here for quite a while. I've read many, many posts, and chosen my hardware very carefully, according to the guidelines .
I'm trying to install R5A12 on a SATA hard drive according to the "Pamphlet of KnoppMyth" instructions. I've managed to manually install the partitions, format two of the two partitions, and (I think) get past backend install to frontend install. I think somewhere along the line, I got confused by the pamphlet instructions about not creating the "mythtv" username during manual install. I didn't know what to do, so I just left the field blank. I'm confused about which Myth database and hostname settings I used and where.
I'm now stuck in the install frontend dialog box "Database Configuration 1/2" I'm guessing I've screwed up some database or hostname settings, since I keep getting the error "Myth could not connect to the database. Please verify your database settings below." I should mention that I do not yet have a tv tuner card installed.
I'd really appreciate any help.
Thanks
Shplad
p.s. Contrary to some statements, SilenX case fans and Seasonic power supplies ARE available in Canada.

If you are just doing a single box install the easiest way is to just not touch any of the settings.

How about starting from scratch again? That's always been my approach when I borked a KnoppMyth install, which has happened a few times.
Anyway, the steps and the order of steps is important because you can end up getting ahead of yourself and miss the part where you configure the networking correctly, which causes these sorts of problems. I know I had that problem with R5A12.
Oh and:

Heh. I would think after choosing carefully, you'd end up with a PATA drive... Especially since you can then follow a simpler set of instructions...
[EDIT: whoops, I thought you were having problems with the frontend not connecting to the backend. i think, however, that my recommendation of using a PATA drive and doing an autoinstall is still a good idea.]

Thanks for the input.
Yes, I read about the SATA issues, but I also read one can use a manual install to work around them. I'm fairly sure that SATA is not the problem here, though you're right it does prevent me from doing an auto-install, which would have been easier/more fool-proof.
There must be some way at a console prompt to check my database and hostname settings, no? I tried going to console using Ctrl-Alt-F1 and at the console prompt I typed "hostname" command. That yielded "Knoppix". Is that normal?
Oh, and the pamplet of Knoppmyth doesn't mention anything about formatting the root and swap partitions, only the /myth and /cache partitions. Do I have to format them manually or does the installer take care of that at some point?
Unlike what was mentioned in the Pamphlet of KnoppMyth, I'm pretty sure I never saw a "Configure" menu option in the installer GUI. Instead, I see Options 1 through 6. and Option 1 is "Frontend".
Thanks

Start over. Do a manual install and DON'T create a user with the name mythtv.

Thanks, but is there no other way? I modified my first reply to contain more info. I know for certain that I did not create a user during the manual install named mythtv. I just left it blank. What is one supposed to enter in that field, if not mythtv? I can almost taste success and a really great PVR around the corner.
Thanks again.

Well, if you don't know how you screwed it up... Starting over it the best option. have you tried to start mysql manually (/etc/init.d/mysql start)? have you looked the the mysql log to see if it is having issue starting? Without a tuner card, you can install and start the configuration process, but that is about it...

Also, leaving the username blank may have caused the install script to abort at some point and leave things further along unconfigured. I don't know that for sure, though.

 Good guess, but it shouldn't.

Thanks guys. What about my last couple of questions about the hostname and formatting partitions? Don't take this the wrong way, but ....I want to keep learning, rather than just follow instructions.

As MySQL lives on /, the other partitions don't come to play. The hostname would be whatever you set it to... If you require further assistance, you'll need to answer my questions.

Thanks, but I have no idea what you mean. Isn't the root partition on the hard drive? If I only formatted /cache and /mythtv partitions, how will the software write to the root partition, or install mysql? Is MySQL written to the /myth partition? Please clarify. No offense, but I think there's still room for improvement in the install documentation. If I ever get knowledgeable enough, I'll be happy, if allowed, to contribute my part to improving it. (I'm pretty good at that kind of thing.) Spell it out for me.

Start over. The longer this thread gets, the more confusion I get out of it. The installation process isn't that longer. if you want to help improve the documentation, you'll need to do several installs at any rate. Think of it as your way of giving back....

well you can't install linux without a / partition it's just not possible on knoppmyth or any other distrobution. so saying you don't have one is a bit confusing. As far as the hostname is concerned it is just plain irrelevant. If you are having problems with connecting to the backend my guess is you changed some setting in mythtv-setup and didn't get it right. for a single box you should leave all those settings alone. it uses localhost, and the loopback address, so your hostname doesn't play into it at all.

cesman:
If it's confusing to you, and you wrote the software, imagine how I feel. I RTFM. I followed the instructions exactly, as much as they were accurate.
I'm used to learning by trial and error. But there's an awful lot to learn here. I still don't see how starting over is going to change anything when two essential questions remain. Does the installer or does it not format the other two partitions, or do I have to format them manually? And in the Myth Pamplet, it reads "After you create and format the 2 partitions above, choose 1. Configure Installation." I do not have any such option. Did the writer mean "choose Install Frontend"?
I'll start over. If that doesn't work, I'll be back here.
Thanks all
