I'm a bit confused on how to install things. First things first, I'll let you know what HW config is:

PVR350
XP 1800
Plenty of RAM
120GB Disk Auto-Installed
GF4 MX 440 w/ Svideo Out to TV
47" Sony TV w/ Svideo in from GF4

So I went through the auto-install and things went well. I reboot and remove the media but voila, just a black screen. I realize that the Xserver must be trying to run at a resolution that is too high. The only way I know to correct this is to set your XF86Config-4 file up to support your video card right?

Question is...how do I do this? If I copy the NVIDIA-example from /X11 it won't work because the nvidia driver hasn't been installed and won't be until mythfilldatabase and mythtv-setup have run.

A quick check of the XF86Config-4 file shows me that everything is Kosher...it's trying to run at 800X600 and then 640X480 at a default depth of 16.

To be proactive, I went into lilo.conf and made sure that vga=normal was there. Just to get a bit squirrely I changed it up and put vga=788, saved, lilo -v, reboot and got the same problem.


So the main problem I'm facing is this...how do I get X initialized for my card when I can't install the drivers for it until AFTER I get X initialized and run mythtv-setup and mythfilldatabase? I'm kinda in a catch 22 here.

Use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to another virtual console in text mode. This should be readable on your screen. You can log in there as root and run the Nvidia install script docuemnted various places here and on the Wiki. Then you'll need to get a good XF86Config-4. Again any number of examples are posted here. You may need to try a couple different ones. If you have networking set up the easiest thing may be to DL them from another machine.

It says in the install notes to run the nvidia install AFTER you do a mythfilldatabase and do myth-setup.

If I do this, what 'kernel' is this speaking of and what are the 'tabs' down there...do they mean return?

cd /usr/src
tar xjvf kernel<TAB>
install-nv<TAB>


Also, If I do the nvidia install before I do myth-setup...will I need to reinstall the nvidia drivers afterwards?

you don't need to do the kernel stuff anymore. the install-nvidia-xxxx.sh script does it for you now.

I've done lots of installs and trust me you want to install the nvidia drivers right off. just like tjc said.

That made things nice. I got through the setup now and am staring at the MythTV config default menu Thanks for the help all.


One quick question though about the nvidia drivers - what's the difference between the 6XXX and the 7XXX ones?

Pretty hard to do if you can't even see the screen...

The numbers are just automatically generated build numbers from Nvidia. For what changes they've documented you'll have to go look at their website. Cecil included multiple versions because the newest drivers have some issues with very old (like GeForce2) cards. Most people should try the newer one (higher number) first. If doesn't work for you try the other.

I'm assuming by now that you've figured out "tab completion".

Perhaps going to the nvidia site and taking a look at the changelog...

actually the biggest reason for including the older ones would be because the newest ones have a bug with 1080i output. I believe they have fixed the problems with the older cards.
