I use an older version of ssh secure shell which is free to non commerical use. Looks like they're on version 4.
http://ftp.ssh.com/priv/secureshell/403 ... -4.0.3.exe
You can copy/paste from within it into nano. I really don't like vi myself. Nano is an older, less powerful editor for LINUX. Get it by doing:
(as root)
# apt-get update
# apt-get install nano
Copying in ssh is a little tougher. What I usually do is copy the file to my home directory and then use the file manager within ssh to drag and drop to my windows desktop.

yes or even right click and copy it into the clipboard on windows then open up the filename you want in ssh with vi, nano whatever you want and right click in the putty window it will paste it all in there.

Glad to help out! What I find distrubing is that I can't find anything about directives in the file you pasted into the post. I know I found a line in mine a while ago, and deleted it. Hmmm....
Well, glad samba is up and running for you -- ENJOY

Just revised my howto with more details (should be very easy to follow now). BTW, that darn line that I deleted is:
include = /etc/samba/dhcp.conf
That must be commented or deleted! Well, enjoy.

Graysky,
Great data - I will be diving in shortly but see some of the original process changed along the thread - so will need to sort it out ... any piece I should pay special attention to.
However - the big piece I wanted to know about was (I like you) was hoping to use my MythTV box to hit shares within the VideoPlayer on XP shares? ... and vice versa.
I've used every PVR to-date, and all SW ones on XP platforms so I am VERY LINUX novice, but could not stay away and the VideoPlayer which I have yet to evn experience was a big thrust.... I am working to stabilize my Myth box for TV, but am eager to get into the VideoPlayer and have a TON TON of video files from my other PVR setups on shares on XP boxes.
Also curious on how adding the IMDB works within Myth and the video player.
Thx a ton - adivce on any of this, comments, guidance ?

I don't think any step is more inportnat that the next Just post in here if you get into trouble. You can use SAMBA to access shares. If you want to mount a share on your Win32 box, you will need to mount it in your /etc/fstab which is something I have not done. Whenever I wanted to do anything, I would always copy the video file over to the myth box from the Win32 box... not the other way around.
I'm sure someone in the group can help you if you cannot figure it out by reading the SAMBA HOWTO.
Sorry you messed around with PVRs under windows. They all looks thin compared to mythtv when I was reading about them. Once you install knoppmyth a few times, you'll begin to feel comfortable with it.
The only thing I have noticed about mplayer in myth is that the R4 out of the box didn't play all my video files: some divx, some xvid. I had to complie the new (0.92 I think) version of mplayer for that to work... did someone write a HOWTO on that?

Graysky,
So here is a ? for u. I have a TON of videos on XP shared drives. I'd love to be able and hit them from my MythTV box in the video lobrary.
But walking before running let me ask this.
1) I have so many that many disks (which I could toss in the MythBox would be ok). I will move them over but they will be seperate disks - can u do this? And how hard is this on different physical disks within the MythTV box.
2) Since I am still hosting most of my videos on those other boxes, I am just at a point where I am going to move some over - ala Samba if I can get that running. Once I get there, I am curious about how the IMDB lookup actually occurs. Example (and I think things must be in the Video path by default ... kinda goes back to my last question - not sure on multiple paths or drives) .... If "Beautiful Mind.mpg" is there - what will occur?
Thanks so much for what u can offer.

I would say get yourself a nice 200 gig drive and don't worry about it There is a thread that talks about some LINUX program that handles it. I don't have a lot of time right now to look for the thread, but I'm pretty sure it's in the Myth FAQ.
Your other question about IMDB: it never works for me (neither does mythweather). It worked once or twice, but now it just seems to pop up a box asking me to manually enter the number to the IMDB, when I do nothing happens. As I recall, you go into the video manager and select the movie, then hit one of the buttons to query the db. It uses the filename at first, if it finds nothing, it will prompt you for the correct IMDB number.
EDIT: the problem was my damn netgear FR114P firewall/router. I replaced it with a new one (warrantee replacement) and everything works now.

the linux program (if you can call it that) that handles multiple drives is lvm(logical volume manager) and there is a link to instructions in the faq I believe.
As for the IMDB it just puts the filename text into a search agianst the database and if it is close enough it will bring back some suggestions, if it can't find anything it will ask you for the imdb number imput the number without the tt stuff basically just the numeric part and it should pull the data and put it in the database.

One of the first things that worked well for me was weather, no issues there - and I am very fine with IMDB manual lookups which also seems to work very fine.
I will look into the volume tool you mention. I currently have around 8 200GB drives loaded with movies - and most don't exceed 4GB (yes, I know this is an issue (-: )
I will admit - was a tad disappointed with the Media Player ? Are there any sexy options to use within Myth. I miss nice OSD, and some of the bells and whistles. I still also need to get the remote synch'd. I saw xine and ogle mentioned - do you guys have any suggestions.
Thx for all the support

Why not use SMB client to mount window drive in /mythtv/video or /mythtv/music?
also do you guys know if it's possible to execute a script when we switch to MythVideo or MythMusic at the front end? My Win32 boxes are not on all the time and I would like to execute a script to try to mount it if it's not mounted. (at least it'll try to connect to the win32 box and what not)

You could write a script and put it in the menu.
