Hi, I'm really new to this but pretty good with computers.
My problem is that when I install KnoppMyth on my system, it shows nothing on the screen. I found out this was because it auto configed itself to use the vga out even though nothing was connected to it (I had it connected to my tv's SVIDEO). So I connected it to my monitor and looked around on the forums. I tryed configuring the XF86Config-4 file to look like the nividia tvout sample file, then pluged it back into the tv and what I got was x server (the gui) failed to load. So I tryed doing the nvidia 6629 driver install and got the same thing.
I am also having trouble with my bt878 tuner card but would like it if I could atleast get the video to work before I start working on that.
Can anyone help me out a little?

A bit more detail might help us help you...
There are a number of sample XF86Config-4 files around here, includind a couple I've posted. The key difference is usually a modeline. Searching for "modeline generator" should get you the pointer to a useful online utility... However without more detail we're just semi-randomly guessing.

Have sort of the same problem. Just installed the drivers from /usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-7174-debian.sh but I still get the black screen on TV-out. The VGA output shows up nice, though.
I have a Radeon Geforce2 MX card with S-video and composite out. Both are connected to the TV.
On a sidenote: Right now I can watch all the shows I downloaded from swedb_grab (whatever), but the program guide is still blank, not even any rows for channels. Have I missed a step when I did the mythfilldatabase for the first time? I read something about you having to enter XMLTV-ID on every channel, but I didn't get it that much...

no you don't.
radeon = ATI
Geforce = Nvidia
AFAIK they have never colaborated on a video card.

Hehe, thanks for that slip-up. I have an nVidia nForce chipset with on-board graphics AND a Geforce2MX with S-video and composite out.
Now can you aid me?

If you have a geforce2, you will probably want to use nvtv to enable your tv out. A search of the forum for nvtv should get you started.

When I install my system when I first boot from the CD I put at the boot prompt "tv" amongst other things.
After the install X loads but all I get is a black screen. I press CTRL+ALT+F1 to go back to a console and as root install the nvidia driver. I have used version 71xx and 7664 and after installation and rebooting my screen comes up fine without touching the XF86Config-4 file.
I live in Aussie land and am thus using PAL and have my computer connected through the composite port.

Whereas my NTSC TV is far more finicky and won't display a blessed thing without my trusty, carefully and redundantly backed up, custom XF86Config-4 file and it's magic mode line:
Modeline "800x600" 40.12 800 848 968 1056 600 601 605 628 #60Hz
I actually worked out and tested several good ones recently and trimmed my XF86Config-4 down to a nice minimal size but seem to have lost it some how.

Yeah, done that and it worked. Sadly I got a fat black border around the screen which I tried to remedy with the nvtv-tool. It helped, but unfortunately since I'm using PAL here in Sweden, the resolution that worked fine for NTSC (it works but the screen is black/white) made some of the buttons disappear outside the screen in PAL-mode.
I tried with Large, 800x600 and Large 640x480 but nothing worked as well as the NTSC,Large#,768,576 settings where all the buttons where shown.
Also, the quality on the TV-out sucks on this nvidia-card. So I'll try putting in my Radeon 9000 which has got dramatically better quality. Sure I'll lose the hardware decoding, but hopefully the TV-out will work...? If I install the radeon drivers from /usr/local/bin and edit the XF86Config-4 to show "ati" instead of "nvidia" (anything more I need to change?).

I notice that ATI have updated thier Linux drivers ( ATI Proprietary Linux x86 Drivers for XFree86 / X.Org Version 8.14.13) and added new installation instructions. They mention 2D acceleration, I don't know if that would assist, not had a chance to try it with my 9250 card yet.
Good Luck, and let us know how you get on.

I didn't think the geforce2 cards could use xvmc anyway.
The nvtv tool comes with a nice gui for generating overscan timings that should fix your overscan problem. This used to work with older versions of knoppmyth, but with the current version (or R5A15.1 at least) it doesn't work. Something to do with it not being able to find gtk libraries. It was a bit cludgey anyway. You had to modify the source code to be able to invoke your chosen overscan settings from the command line (if one of the predefined ones did not work). I was able to create a setting that displayed 800x576 and having the number of lines match the PAL standard made the picture on the TV look a **lot** better. No fuzzing from vertical re-scaling I guess. I had to do this on my R4V5 installation so that I could use the nvtv gui, but once I found the settings that worked best for my TV I modified the source code so that I could invoke those settings from the command line and then copied the source to my R5A15.1 install and it works a treat.
My X resolution is still 800x600 though (but only the first 576 lines are displayed on the TV). To get myth to display everything properly I just had to set the gui y size. In the Appearance settings.

You're right, it doesn't. GeForce 4 and above.

It would be so nice of you if you could mail me that source-code and the settings you use, since I can probably use the exact same as you are.

Yeah, tried the overscan settings on the command-prompt but they didn't do anything.

I'll try to post the patch on the wiki when I get a chance (maybe tonight). It concerns me that the various overscan settings have no effect for you though. When I first started using it the Small, Large and Huge overscan settings for 800x600 resolution made quite a difference.
