So, I've searched high and low through these boards and can't find an answer. Basically, I have done a fresh install of KnoppMyth R4 and gone through the necessary configuration. Everything goes smoothly there. Obviously, my TV-out doesnt work right away, but that's the least of my problems now. First I want to get the capturing to work.
If I goto a shell and do cat /dev/video > test.mpg , the resulting mpeg is nothing. It's writing some data (4 seconds or so is about a meg), but I can't view the file on my Windows machine with WMP, Quicktime, or anything.
My mythtv system is like this:
Pentium 4 2.0ghz
512 DDR2700
200gb Western Digital 7200rpm
Happauge PVR-350 (grey remote)
Linksys NIC
Gigabyte GA-8GE667 Pro w/ onboard audio and VGA
Any help would be super fantastic. Feel free to IM on my aim screenname: kurro
...my username on these boards would have been kurro as well, but i missed an 'r'...stupid fingers...

The mpeg that is generated can be view w/ MPlayer on your boxen. Why add an extra step in the troubleshooting process by trying to view it on Windows? At any rate, I'd suggest configuring MythTV(if you have not) and try and watch live TV. Open mythfrontend from an xterm, the frontend should spit out some info. <CTRL><ALT><F1> and log in at the same time you are watching "live TV" if there is a problem ivtv will spit out info. Also check the logs /var/log/mythtv/.

I tried looking at the mpeg with mplayer, with no success. It says there is no video.
I configred MythTV normally and I have update XMLTV, so that works fine. If I try to watch TV, the monitor goes black and the TV is still black. I have to kill the frontend process to get back into MythTV.
I tail'd two logs while I did this: /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log and /var/log/messages. The backend log told me this:
Qsettings: error creating /root/.qt Qsettings::sync:filename is null/empty
The messages log said:
kernel: ivtv: not enough free buffers, stream 0
(several times repeated)
I also tested getting the test color bars with saa7127 and that worked fine as well. So, some things seem to work somewhat. I just dont understand why I cant grab an mpeg straight from /dev/video or /dev/video0.
btw, Thanks for your help

Thought about it a little more, and I am thinking that possibly my PVR350 is not on /dev/video or /dev/video0. In Linux, how do you find out what devices are where? Could it be somewhere like /dev/video37???

No, it would be on /dev/video(the same as /dev/video0). Change the slot the card is in...

Okay, tried a bunch of stuff and finally had to end up unloading ivtv with modprobe -r ivtv and then reloading it with modprobe ivtv-fb. The capturing worked after that. So now I'm off to the TV-out problem, which I will probably be seeking help for in about a week.
I love to hate this stuff. =)

p.s. thanks for your help cesman.

Cesman - picture, remote, all is beautiful. ODD - my PVR250 or no recording activity will occur. I even seem to get a blank dialogue box almost like an error.
Is this known - I will search as well and thanks.

Cesman,
U recall the issue I had with my remote ... is it possible I am missing some Myth Components and this could also be causing the recording issue
When I do the command u showed me, dkpg -l | greg mythtv all I have is
- backend
- common
- database
- frontend
and now the LIRC piece
It did barf a little saying dvd was not installed? Do I have a collective issue. This was a brand new AUTO-INSTALL this morning??
Just let me know your thoughts...

Please don't jump from topic to topic with the same problem. Reread the last post I made to you. I already told you want to do to correct this.

I've tried to keep my topics within the threads of others that perhaps have had similar experiences - my bad, but not sure I saw the answer you referenced.
I loaded the Nividia drivers per the instructions - issue... It did not reload in an X window to complete the process, but the Nvidia banner did come up.
I reboot - and MythTV will currently not load since I attempted this load.
I guess this and your other guidance as you referenced is appreciated?

There was no need to reboot. When you say mythtv will now come up, please elaborate. Does X start? Does the FVWM start? What happend you you try and run MythTV from an XTerm?

Cesman,
Here is what occured, all was well as u know.
I then:
1 - ran #install-nvidia.sh
2 - all looked fine, even got an Nvidia banner - looked good
3 - it said in the doc an Xterm window would then ask for some info (this I did not see)
4 - I went ahead and did a reboot at that point to see if it would continue.
Here is what happens:
1 - When I reboot - TV OUT DOES WORK in BOOT (both monitors are active)
2 - Before X loads, I see the Nvidia banner the X loads
3 - At that point - the TV display goes blank, and the monitor goes to a blank X background
4 -When I try to left Click, and type MythTV - nothing happens
Summary:
1 - TV out disappears after X loads
2 - MythTV at this point will not load
Thx kindly for your support

I re-read your docs noting:
If you have an nForce chipset or any nVidia card, before running the command below, you may want to edit /etc/X11/XFConfig-4 and add
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "TV" # This is only if attaching to a TV.**
I am not seeing this file either.
Just fyi if you were to ask.
