I insert the CD and do an automatic install. It then tells me that everything has installed properly and I need to reboot so I remove the CD and reboot the machine. After the initial boot process for the system a flashing underscore is on the screen and it does not allow me to type anything. I have left this on the screen for awhile and nothin happens.

Is there something that I am doing worong? Shouldn't it boot into KnoppMyth at this point?

Hi,
You didn't give anyone much for clues. :( Quite difficult to help without some basics, like what version (I see the R5A16, good choice) you are trying to go with, checked the hard drive jumper to be master, maybe some other hardware details. Sounds like cmos settings possably.

If you don't give us enough detail the most we can tell you is "perhaps a search of the forum". Other than that your playing "doctor it hurts" and refusing to provide enough history or symptoms to allow a meaningful diagnoses.

Please! Describe your hardware in some detail (mobo model or chipset is particularly useful). Give a better description of when it stops and what initial boot process you're talking about. The BIOS diagnosotics? The Linux hardware detection and boot? What is the last thing you see on the screen before that?

Have you tried following the directions to see if Ctl-Alt-F2 takes you to a different virtual console?

Is it even getting that far? Have you gone into your BIOS setup and enabled the diagnostics? Maybe you're getting a message like "no bootable disk found"?

Or maybe it's freezing somewhere in the hardware detection during the Linux boot?

Or....

My first thought is a search of the forum for lilo and mount. But like tjc stated, you're not giving us enough information. It is hard to tell if POST and completed and the system is attempting to boot from the hard drive.

I have the exact same issue. When the install is complete and it asks you to remove the cd and reboot the pc reboots to a black screen with the cursor flashing in the top left hand corner.

Athlon XP1800+
512 MB
Gigabyte GA-7VTXH+ VIA KT266A chipset
Powercolor Radeon 9800 Pro (Bios flashed to XT - R360 core)
Sound Blaster Live
Happauge 250 PVR (not MCE)
80 gig Maxtor HD (Primary Master)
250 gig Maxtor HD (Primary Slave with Window XP installed)

Sorry, forgot to add that the system does post. I can boot into windows on IDE 1 in the BIOS with no problems. The Primary slave HD (Windows) is at the end of the parallel cable and the Primary master is on the middle connection of the parallel cable (I don't think it matters but thought I would at it anyway).

Hi,

I would try dropping the windows drive from the cable, double check the jumper is set for master and connect it to the end connector. The cable connectors are different, that's why there is a jumper position for "cable select".

You probably can stick the "other" thing somewhere else :) and then tweak lilo to make it a selection as I think windows will boot from the secondary cable position. You will have to dig for details.
